The Metric System
Add these notes in your foldable.
Length
• Basic unit = meter
• Other units include:
– Millimeter (mm) used to measure small
objects i.e. top of a stick pin
– Centimeter (cm) used to measure length of
paper
– Meter (m) used to measure soccer fields
– Kilometer (km) used to measure long
distances like roads (similar to miles)
– Light years - distance light travels in one year.
Used to measure from Earth to other planets

10mm = 1 cm
100 cm = 1 meter
1000 m = 1 km
Kilo/hecto/deka/m,l,g/deci/centi/milli
Kids have died by drinking chocolate milk.
Kilo = one thousand
Centi = one hundredth
Milli = one thousandth
Temperature
• Basic unit = Celcius
• 2 Fixed points
– 0°C = freezing
– 100°C = boiling
• Other Comparisons
21°C = room temperature
37°C = body temperature
Density
• Basic unit = grams per milliliters (g/mL)
• Density = relationship between mass and
volume
• Formula = mass
volume
Density of water = 1 g/mL
Density is less than 1 g/mL = floats
Density is more than 1 g/mL = sinks
Volume
• Basic unit = Liter (L)
• Volume = amount of space an object takes up.
• 3 ways to measure
– 1. Regular Solid = l x w x h = cm3
– 2. Liquid = pour in grad. Cylinder and read proper
unit i.e. mL
– 3. Irregular objects = use water displacement
method i.e. 200 mL to 220 mL = 20 mL volume
• Units used: mL for liquids or cc/cm3
1cm3=1mL
Mass
• Basic unit = kilogram (kg)
• Mass = measure of amount of matter in an
object.
• Units used
– Kg = measure large objects like humans
– Grams= measure small objects like mice
• Ex. Nickel = 5 grams; dollar bill = 1 g
– Mg = measure very little things like crumbs
Mass continued
• Mass is constant; weight is not.
• Mass will stay the same if you go to the
moon.
• Your mass on Earth is the same as on the
moon.
• Your body mass won’t change if you go to
another planet.
Weight
• Basic unit = Newton (N)
• Weight = measure of attraction between 2
objects due to GRAVITY.
• Gravity = force of attraction
Weight continued
• Weight can change on other planets due
to different gravitational pulls on each
planet.
• For Example:
– Weight on Earth = 60 lbs.
– Weight on moon = 10 lbs. (1/6th)
