water forms of the Earth?

Study the illustration of a hard-boiled egg.
How many layers does it have?
Compare the hard-boiled egg with the
illustration of the layers of the Earth.
THE CRUST
The outermost layer of the Earth.
Made up of loose solid rocks.
Where continents and oceans are
located.
About 10-65 km thick
Composed of upper crust and lower crust
Upper crust is made up of granite rock and
is called SIAL – Silicon & Aluminum
Lower crust is made up of basaltlike rock
and is called SIMA - Silicon & Magnesium
THE MANTLE
The thickest layer of the earth
About 2,880 – 2,900 km. thick.
Divided into upper mantle and lower
mantle.
Upper mantle-solid rocks
THE MANTLE
Lower mantle – very hot, molten
rocks
Mohorovicic Discontinuity or Mohothe boundary between crust and
mantle named after Andriza
Mohorovicic-the discoverer
Temperature is 860oC in upper
mantle to 2,200oC in lower mantle.
THE CORE
The innermost layer
The hottest layer divided into outer core
and inner core.
Outer core-made of molten iron and
nickel
THE CORE
Inner core – made of solid iron and nickel
 4,700oC - 5,000oC-the temperature of the
entire core.
Think about
this…
What are the layers of the Earth?
Put this in mind
& heart…
Activity A:
• Click YES if the statement is
correct and NO if the
statement is wrong:
1. The CORE is the hottest layer of the
Earth.
Yes
No
2. The mantle is composed of continents
and oceans.
Yes
No
3. Molten iron and nickel are found in the
outer core.
Yes
No
4. Living things exist in the thickest
layer.
Yes
No
5. The entire core has a temperature of
o
4,700-5,000 C.
Yes
No
6. The Mohorovicic Discontinuity is found
between the mantle and the core.
Yes
No
7. Mantle is 2,880-2,900 km thick so it is
known as the thickest layer.
Yes
No
8. Ana plans to build a house of her own.
She can do it in the crust layer.
Yes
No
9. The lower crust is called SIAL because
of abundance of Silicon and Magnesium.
Yes
No
10. Living things exist in the crust.
Yes
No
Activity B:
• Choose the correct answer by
clicking the number.
1. Which is the thickest layer of the Earth?
Inner core
Outer core
crust
mantle
2. In what layer do most life form exist?
mantle
crust
moho
core
3. What layer is also known as SIMA because
of the abundance of silicon and magnesium?
core
Upper crust
Lower crust
mantle
4. Temperature of mantle ranges from
_______ to _______.
860oC – 2,200oC
960oC – 2,000oC
1,000oC-2,100oC
4,700oC-5,000oC
5. Why is the boundary between crust and
mantle called Moho?
It is named after a kind of rock.
It is named after a kind of soil.
It is named after its discoverer.
It is named after a geologist.
Activity C:
• Draw a line to match column A
and B.
B

2. Mantle ●
3. Core

5. SIMA
●
a. The innermost layer
b. The boundary between crust
& mantle
c. Where life form exists
d. The name of the lower crust
e. Found beneath the crust
Test
yourself…
Direction: Identify the following description of the
layers of the earth by writing CRUST,
MANTLE or CORE:
__________ 1. The outermost layer of the earth.
__________ 2. Its outer part is composed of molten
iron and nickel while the inner are
solid iron and nickel.
__________ 3. Mohorovicic Discontinuity is found
between the crust and _________.
__________ 4. This layer has the thickness of
860 – 2,200 km thus referred as the
thickest layer.
__________ 5. It has the temperature of
4,700Oc - 5,000oc.
Do this at home:
Draw an illustration of the
layers of the Earth. Color and label
each layer.
