Due __________________
Answer these questions on a separate
piece of paper.
1. Write your problem statement in the
form of a question. This should be your
testable question.
PROJECT PLAN
2. What is your independent variable? (What
would you change as you investigate your
problem?) There should only be one.
3. What is your dependent variable? (What
would you measure as you investigate your
problem?)
4. Rewrite your problem statement in the form:
“How does the independent variable affect the
dependent variable? (Substitute your
variables for the underlined words.)
PROJECT PLAN
5. Write a hypothesis in the form: “As the
independent variable (increases/decreases),
the dependent variable will
(increase/decrease). (Pick one of the choices,
or another appropriate term.)
6. How will you test your hypothesis? Write a
step by step procedure showing how you will
change your independent variable and how
you will measure the dependent variable. Be
as specific as you can about values for the
variables (actual numbers) and materials you
will need.
PROJECT PLAN
7. List any materials, instruments, or
people you might need that you don’t
think you can get on your own.
8.List any skills or information you will
need that you would like someone to
assist you in obtaining or learning.
PROJECT PLAN
Engineering Project - differences:
4. Rewrite your problem statement in the form: “How
does the independent variable affect the dependent
variable? (Substitute your variables for the
underlined words.)
5. State your engineering goal (this is a statement).
What is it that you expect to accomplish?
6. How will you build your mock-up/prototype and then
test it? Write a step by step procedure showing how
you will build your mock-up/prototype and then how
you will test it. Be as specific as you can about
materials you will need.
PROJECT PLAN
You need to do a literature search to add
to your knowledge to verify that you can
do this project and there is enough
information out there about it.
 Your hypothesis should not be vague…it
should be specific…we should have no
doubt what you will be testing.
