An Overview Developer/ Author
Rita Harte

instructional design coupled
with another major in
psychology, ensures that all
the programs that she
designs are performed with
the participants ultimate
learning in mind.

To be understood is the
foundation of a healthy self
esteem therefore…
Today we
are going to
explore
something
that could
conceivably
alter how
you think
about and
affect others
around you.
We have all three “colours” in us,
however one tends to be more
dominant …
Over 70%
of the
population
is Red
20% of the population is
Green
and 10% is Orange
What is the Key to Effective
Communication?
SEEK FIRST TO
UNDERSTAND…
THEN BE UNDERSTOOD!
--Stephen Covey
70% of the population tend
to have these Experiences
It’s frustrating
when I’m explaining
something to
someone and they
cut me off and tell
me to get to the
point.
When I’m
learning
something new
I need to see it,
hear it, and
experience it
for myself.
Sometimes I feel that
I’m not as smart as
others because I need
time to consider things
before making a
decision. Often I feel
rushed into agreeing to
a decision I’m not
feeling comfortable
with.
Dominant RED Thinking Process
REDS think in terms of chapters -- a
beginning, a middle and an end. They
possess a balance between conceptual
and logical thought processes with an
added, and dominant, element of
instinct. If a situation does not feel
appropriate, a RED thinker will not
make a decision or a move from their
position.

Mind
Mapping
10% of the population
tend to have these
Experiences
When I make a decision
people question me
about the details of how
I came up with the
decision…like I hadn’t
given it any serious
thought.
People sometimes
look at me like
I'm a 'scatter
brain' because I
can hop from
topic to topic
very quickly.
There
manytimes
times
Thereare
are many
that
that
something
something
comes comes
in to my
mind
and
out
my
mouth
in to my mind and out
I realize I'm saying
mybefore

before I
it out loud. It has caused me
realize
I'm saying
out
embarrassment
in theitpast.
Sometimes
just feel me
so

embarrassment in the
past. Sometimes I just
feel so misunderstood!
ORANGE Thinking Process
ORANGES thought process is similar to
mind mapping,they are constantly collecting
data in "pods" for future use. ORANGES
are very comfortable with conceptual ideas
and tend to be the ideas people. The best
way to both speak and write to an ORANGE
is to keep it visually animated and
conversational.
Mind Mapping
…and the mouse froze!
An ORANGE thinker’s mouse freezes when
TOO MANY DETAILED FACTS AND
FIGURES ARE PRESENTED to them for
immediate response. The leap from right to
left brain is too radical without giving the
ORANGE time to analyze the information.

and big picture
20% of the population
tend to have these Experiences
Why does this
person keep going
on and on … can't
they see I have
things to do, a
schedule to keep?
Why do we have
to have a three
hour meeting to
discuss an issue
that should take
about 15 minutes
to resolve?
How can that
person make a
snap decision
like that when
they don't
have all the
facts?
Dominant GREEN Thinking
Process
GREENS tend to have extremely
organized thought processes and are
quite sequential in their thinking. They
process information visually, picturing it
in their mind. The best way to both
speak and write to a GREEN is to keep
it brief, use few words and be as
specific as possible.
…and the mouse froze!
A GREEN thinker’s mouse freezes
when too many emotionally charged
words are directed toward them.
Their natural ability to visualize
words graphically becomes over
stimulated resulting in ‘M.E.G.O’ (my
eyes gloss over).

The Coach
The RED Coach
Natural Coaching Strengths
 Instruction you give will
naturally follow a sequential
order and process
 Explanations will generally take
the shape of beginning, middle
and end – thorough and
comprehensive in scope
Your style will appeal to 70% of the
population
Natural Coaching Challenges
 Your explanations will tend to be
lengthy and wordy
 GREENS may be overwhelmed by
the amount of information and
length of explanation
 ORANGES may tune out before
instructions are complete if they
don’t understand the concept
Coaching REDS
Beginning, Middle and End
 Step 1: Explain the
foundation, where you’re
going to begin
 Step 2: Explain the process,
the steps you are going to
go through
 Step 3: Explain what the end
result will be

HINTS:
 Use visual methods/tools
and examples
 Physically demonstrate and
then let them try it
 Ask them if they ‘feel’ they
have all the info they need
The ORANGE
Coach
Natural Coaching Strengths
•Ability to inspire those around you
•Enthusiasm is contagious
•Ability to see where they want to be
at the end and can paint that picture
clearly for others
•No problem impossible to solve
Natural Coaching Challenges
•Details are not your strength
•REDS and GREENS may become
confused if you do not provide a
structure for them to follow
Coaching ORANGES
•Ask them to tell you what
they think they need to do
based on what they know
now
•Fill in the gaps
•Then ask them to repeat to
clarify their understanding
•Encourage them to find
own solution to issues by
asking questions such as,
"What do you think would
work here?" or "What might
you try next time?“
•Draw a mind map to show
them how things fit together
The GREEN Coach
Natural Coaching Strengths
• Ability to condense information so it is
easy to understand
• Task Management – To Do Lists
• Time Management – efficient in what
you do and say
Natural Coaching Challenges
• REDS may need more information to
feel they understand exactly what you
expect
• ORANGES may appear to tune out if
just presented with facts – start with
concept before detail
• You may be impatient with the need to
repeat yourself – redundancy is difficult
for you
Coaching GREENS
• Written description
ahead of time – brief,
concise
• Allow time to look over
before discussion
• Ask them if it ‘looks’
good to them, if they
see anything missing
• Assess gaps and fill in
only what is necessary
• Ask them t o
summarize their
understanding
Summary:
It takes all 3 thinking
styles to make up a
great team. The trick
is to accept the
differences and
appreciate the
strengths and
challenges of each
person…
including yourself!
Parting Thought
If you always
do what you
always done,
you’ll always
get what you
always got!
-- Zig Ziglar
