New CPSC Guidelines for Determination
of Phthalates in Plastics
 Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
standard operating procedure for determining
phthalates in plastics in children’s toys
 Operating procedure recommends the use of
cryogenic grinding to prepare samples
– Cryogenic grinding can pulverize samples
down to a fine powder of less than 500 microns
– Creates homogenous sample with a larger
surface area improving the extraction process.
