DEVELOPING A RECOVERY
COMMUNITY IN CALDERDALE
The Basement Recovery Project,
Calderdale
WHY IS THE RECOVERY APPROACH SOMETHING
DIFFERENT?
WHY CHOOSE ABSTINENCE AS A BASIS FOR RECOVERY?
BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO TURN THE WATER OFF TO MEND THE
PLUMBING
METHADONE MAINTENANCE TREATMENT & RECOVERY
SO WHAT DRIVES OUR COMMUNITY?
Our users identified the need for peer support by
people who have sustained abstinence.
Recovery requires a variety of paths - CHOICE
The addition of just one abstinent person to a
Social network increased the probability of
abstinence for the next year by 27%
(Litt et al 2009)

SO WHAT’S NEEDED TO MOVE FORWARD?
FOR COMMISSIONERS:
Local solutions are urgently needed for performance managing recovery progress and
transitions to later stages of recovery journeys - Integrated system needs creating that
allows individuals to constructively utilise the right level of service at the right time
FOR PROVIDERS:
There is a recognition that the clients fair best when treatment providers and recovery
communities work in partnership – utilise the model of co-production/shared
outcomes, mutual respect of diverse skill-sets.
FOR THE EMERGING RECOVERY COMMUNITIES:
More effective bridging is needed between treatment and recovery groups in the
community and this process should be peer-led
RC’S need to have an openness to engage with treatment providers
We need more Power of Example – visible recovery. People need to be exposed to
those in abstinent recovery – AND THIS WILL BE THE COMPELLING EVIDENCE
THAT PEOPLE DO RECOVER.
