The 80th Texas Legislature passed the following four
bills that will affect P-16 coordination beginning with
the 2007-2008 school year.

Education/Workforce (P-16) Coordination
House Bill 3826
Change from current law: Students who opted for
the minimum plan in the past were eligible to apply
for admissions to publicly funded general academic
teaching institutions of higher education. Other
aspects of the legislation are completely new,
including the SAT and ACT scores and the automatic
admission of children of public servants killed in the
line of duty.

Rider 44b,Student Success Initiative, 80th Texas

Assist qualifying districts in increasing the
proficiency of their students in Grades 4-8
mathematics and Grade 8 algebra readiness
Grade 4 thru Grade 8: 2007-2008 and 2008-2009

Programs
Campus eligibility for the 2007-2008 and 2008-09
school years based on passing rates on the 2007
Grade 5 Mathematics TAKS test.
Campuses that receive notification of eligibility
based on TAKS scores may apply to receive Rider 44
(b) funds to serve students in Grades 4 through 8
beginning Spring 2008.

Campuses who are awarded grants under this
program will be able to select from the
Commissioner’s List of Approved Programs which is
being determined through a competitive process

funds flow to schools serving students from
Grades 4 thru 8 for the 2007-08 and 2008-09

Intensive Mathematics Instruction
Programs
Upon selection notification, campuses will have the opportunity to
select a program from the TEA approved provider list which
was determined through a competitive process
TEA will then provide districts with Notice of Grant Awards
(NOGAs) for their designated campuses in order to facilitate
purchase of the intensive mathematics program directly form
the selected provider.

Student Success Initiative (SSI)
The goal of the SSI is to ensure that all
students receive the instruction and
support they need to be academically
successful in mathematics and reading.
Starting in spring 2008, 8th graders will be

Students scoring below 60 shall retake the
assessment each time it is administered
