TEA Update for TASM 02/29/08 Legislation Affecting P-12/Higher Education/Workforce (P-16) Coordination House Bill 3826 Change from current law: Students who opted for the minimum plan in the past were eligible to apply for admissions to publicly funded general academic teaching institutions of higher education. Other aspects of the legislation are completely new, including the SAT and ACT scores and the automatic admission of children of public servants killed in the line of duty. TEA Update for TASM 02/29/08 Intensive Mathematics Instruction Programs Rider 44b,Student Success Initiative, 80th Texas Legislature Assist qualifying districts in increasing the proficiency of their students in Grades 4-8 mathematics and Grade 8 algebra readiness Grade 4 thru Grade 8: 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 TEA Update for TASM 02/29/08 Intensive Mathematics Instruction Programs Campus eligibility for the 2007-2008 and 2008-09 school years based on passing rates on the 2007 Grade 5 Mathematics TAKS test. Campuses that receive notification of eligibility based on TAKS scores may apply to receive Rider 44 (b) funds to serve students in Grades 4 through 8 beginning Spring 2008. TEA Update for TASM 02/29/08 Intensive Mathematics Instruction Programs Campuses who are awarded grants under this program will be able to select from the Commissioner’s List of Approved Programs which is being determined through a competitive process TEA Update for TASM 02/29/08 Intensive Mathematics Instruction Programs The district will be responsible for ensuring that funds flow to schools serving students from Grades 4 thru 8 for the 2007-08 and 2008-09 school years Notification of eligibility will be mailed to superintendents and principals of eligible campuses. Starting in spring 2008, 8th graders will be subject to all SSI requirements for both reading and mathematics. accountability system and make recommendations to the legislature Requires the agency to conduct a survey and prepare a report to determine the ability of school districts to administer assessment must attain Cumulative score ≥ 70n n = number of EOC assessments taken in each subject For students on the Recommended & Distinguished HS Plan, this means, for example Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II n=3 Cumulative score ≥ 210 For students on the Minimum Plan, this means, for example Algebra I and Geometry n=2 Cumulative score ≥ 140 TEA Update for TASM 02/29/08 SB 1031—EOC Assessments Students must score at least 60 for the score to count towards their cumulative score Students scoring below 60 shall retake the assessment each time it is administered Students scoring below 70 must receive
