Student Guide
Course Content:
• The successful student in Intermediate 2
•
English will have achieved outcomes in each of
the component units.
The award of Intermediate 2 English will be
based on a combination of internal and
external assessment. To gain the award you
must achieve a pass in all component units of
the course as well as external assessment.
Course Entry Levels:
• Overall, grade 3 or better at Standard
Grade. Performance in Reading and
Writing should be at least a grade 3.
Unit 1 – Language Study.
Outcome 1 – Close Reading.
• Objective – to

understand, analyse
and evaluate nonfiction.
Internal Assessment
– you must obtain
50% of the marks to
gain a pass. You must
pass in order to sit
the final exam.
• External Assessment

– Paper 1 – Close
Reading.
This is worth 50% of
the total marks
available.
Unit 1: Outcome 2 – Writing.
• Internal Assessment • Expressive –

only. A pass must be
achieved before you
can sit the final
exam.
You are required to
compose 1 piece of
writing which is
either expressive,
creative or a report.

Creative – piece of
prose fiction,

Unit 2 – Literary Study.
Outcome 1 – Textual Analysis.

Text – will be either
prose, poetry or
drama.
• Internally assessed.
• You must obtain over
50% of the marks in
order to gain a pass.
You must pass this
outcome in order to
sit the final exam.
Unit 2: Outcome 2 – Critical
Essay.

imaginative texts

class.
Prose, poetry, drama
or media texts.
• Externally assessed.
