Animals In the Sahara
Animals
The animal population in the Sahara consists of
animals like gerbil, jerboa, cape hare, the desert
hedgehog, dorcas gazelle, barbary sheep, oryx, dama
deer, Nubian wild, anubis baboon, spotted hyena,
common jackal, sand fox, Libyan striped weasel, the
slender mongoose, frogs, toads, crocodiles, lizards,
chameleons, skinks, cobras snails, brine and algae
shrimps. The avian species in the Sahara desert
include birds like ostriches, raptors, secretary birds,
guinea fowl, Nubian bustards, desert eagle and barn
owls, sand larks, pale crag martins, and brownnecked and fan-tailed ravens.
Herbivores
• Plants are able to use the sun and water to
grow stems, leaves, and fruits.
• Other animals eat these parts of plants.
• Because of this, they are called producers.
They make the first level energy for other
animals to eat.
• The plants are then eaten by herbivores.
Herbivores are animals that eat only plants.
Herbivores continued
• Herbivores in the Sahara Desert include
animals like the small desert jerboa.
• The mounflon (a wild sheep),
• the Dorcus gazelle.
• Another herbivore is the Arabian camel. It is
used by people to transport items in the desert.
Camels need very little water.
• This makes them good desert animals. Also if
you want to explore the dessert they are great
for taking you everywhere.
Carnivores
• Some animals only eat meat. They are called
carnivores.
• In the Sahara desert, there are many
carnivores. The sand cat, striped hyena, and
even the sidewinder snake are carnivores that
live in the Sahara Desert.
• Some animals eat both plants and other
animals. They are called omnivores.
Sahara Meteorology
On average, it only has 8
inches of rainfall per year
The winters are considered cool for desert
conditions, with an average temperature of
55° F (13° C). The summers are very hot,
with the highest ever recorded temperature
at 136° F (58° C)
Plants
Plants con’t
• Most of the plants that thrive within the Sahara Desert are among the
xerphytes, which are plants that adapt to a very small amount of water
supply.
• Even though the Sahara is one of the hottest and driest places in the
world, many different types of plants are able to survive there because
they are able to adapt to the climate.
• The roots of some plants dig deep into the earth’s surface to find stored
water
• Cactus have spikes instead of leaves which helps prevent water loss
through the stomata
• The little amount of water some plants have can be stored for a long
period of time
Examples of Plants
• African Welwitchsia: The roots of this plant dig deep down for water in
order to survive; some are known to survive for hundreds, even thousands
of years.
• African Peyote Cactus: This plant has spikes instead of leaves to prevent
water loss, and the thickness helps it to store water for a long time;
mescaline, an alkaloid found in this plant can help treat diseases.
• Eragotis: Desert grass which spreads rapidly.
• Date Palm: A palm tree that’s among one of the most important exports of
the Sahara, it’s an important food source for the people
• Doum Palm: This is a sacret palm tree among the Egyptians; this palm tree
does not produce branches and is used in tea or made into cake,
sweetmeat, and molasses.
• Thyme: An herb that many Saharan animals feed on, this herb has many
purposes from being used in dishes and meals, to treating indigestion,
respiratory infections and spasms.
• Trees: Few people know that olive trees, orange trees, and fig trees grow
near the Nile river; olive trees actually originated in Africa, and then later
cultivated to other countries.
Geography of Sahara
Sahara Desert
• The Sahara desert is the world largest hot
desert
• Located in Africa, covers over 9,400,000
square kilometers
• Covers over 8 countries and borders 2 oceans.
•
Good Parts
• Sahara desert Is the best place to be but if you
were to servive there you would want to be In
the Morocco and Algeria area
• The morocco area is a very moist place with
plenty of water sources to be around
• The Algeria are is a fertile environment with
the most rainfall and the best weather
Bad Parts
• Sahara has one of the roughest climates in the
world, with trade winds, sand storms, the high
humidity and the fact it only gets about 10
inches of rain per year.
• The Sahara has a lot of dry spots with no
source of water for miles
• One of the worst parts of the Sahara desert
are near the Ahaggar and Tibesti `
