Developing University-Industry-Government Collaboration
Opportunities
Boeing Technology | Phantom Works
• Work with industry partners and suppliers in identifying technology
needs, and establishing mutually beneficial collaboration opportunities
with ‘best in class’ universities and research institutes
• Engage University and Government involvement on applied R&D projects
that have a near-term scope and short life span
• Focus on research projects that lead to validated analytical modeling
approaches through applied product developments (e.g. aerodynamic
turbulent boundary layer, active noise cancellation)
• Develop and implement global working together best practices to avoid
prolonged R&D program delays. Issues may include;
• Intellectual Property issues
• Export Compliance
• Confidentiality vs Publication
• Conflict of Interest issues
• Leverage Enterprise-wide capabilities and resources of Industrial
Participation program to open doors to new technologies and ideas of
talented people with different cultures, backgrounds, and experiences.

R&D Collaboration Initiative in Italy - Overview
Boeing Technology | Phantom Works
• In Italy, The Boeing Company has a large number of suppliers
supporting its commercial and defense programs.
• Alenia Aeronautica is a partner in the design and production of
the Boeing 787 commercial airliner
• IDS and Finmeccanica have enjoyed a long-standing cooperative
relationship across a wide range of military programs (including
the launch of the 767 Tanker Transport)
• In 2003, the Phantom Works organization decided to strengthen
Company ties in Italy by pursuing collaborations in Research and
Development – meant to complement existing business
relationships

R&D Collaboration Initiatives in Italy – Status (1 of 2)
Boeing Technology | Phantom Works
• A Memorandum of Understanding with the Italian
Aerospace Research Center (CIRA) was signed in
September 2003.
- Seeking opportunities to collaborate in projects addressing
advanced aircraft development, UAVs, and Space technology
- The MOU was renewed in September 2005
• Two collaboration tasks are under way with the Italian
Aerospace Research Center (CIRA)
- Icing Technology
- Active Flow Control
- Possible participation by Alenia Aeronautica

R&D Collaboration Initiatives in Italy – Status (2 of 2)
Boeing Technology | Phantom Works
• Collaboration with Alenia Aeronautica for the development of lowweight and low-interior-noise composite materials for aircraft
fuselage structures.
- Four year research program
- Extensive use of Alenia’s laboratory facilities in Pomigliano d’Arco
- Involving Universities, laboratories (e.g., CIRA and CNR), and
other organizations in the Campania Region
• Boeing Company membership in IMAST (Ingegneria MAteriali e
STrutture), a Campania Region consortium for polymeric
materials
- Joining ten (10) major organizations, such as Alenia,
CIRA, the University of Naples, etc.
- Associate Membership
- Leveraging local experience and R&D infrastructure
- Three R&D projects implemented by Boeing in 2006

R&D Collaboration Initiatives in Italy – Looking Ahead…
Boeing Technology | Phantom Works
• Seeking opportunities to utilize CIRA’s major, state-of-art, test
facilities
- Icing wind tunnel
- Plasma tunnel
- Crash test facility
• Research support for R&D on advanced composite materials
sought wherever expertise is available
- Universities (University of Naples – Federico II)
- National Laboratories (CIRA and CNR)
- Small specialized companies
R&D collaboration and program support opportunities sought
throughout Italy.
- Composite materials of biological origin,
- Chopped-fiber composites,
- High temperature materials, etc.
• Working with the Boeing Madrid Center for R&D collaboration
opportunities in Air Traffic Management systems, UAVs and
fuel cell technology

Italy - US University Collaboration
Boeing Technology | Phantom Works
Masters in Systems Engineering Program
• University of Naples – Frederico II (UniNa)
• Boeing to support curriculum development plus tuition
for up to 12 Italian students to obtain a Masters in
Systems Engineering
• University of Missouri – Rolla will adapt current Masters
program to Italian engineering needs and set up a
distance learning program with UniNa.
• Project kicked off in Oct 2005
• Successful results of such cooperative research
activities could lead to further economic development
opportunities in US and Italy.
