Research and Understanding Universities of Salford and York, UK Update for Partner Meeting, Athens 26th November 2013 Overview of activities Diverse number of actions being undertaken • Mentoring • Positive images • Network of EU researchers • Stakeholder seminar series/network • Research Created a flow between these activities Mentoring Working with 3 young Roma from Romania living in Manchester, UK • Tiberious • Vasil • Anina Developing as trained community researchers and introducing them to higher (University) education in the UK Working with partners in Manchester Mentoring Around 8 hours per week each • Equip with research skills that will enable them to carry out research in their community on issues related to the health and well-being of Migrant Roma (regular supervisory sessions) • Support with presentation skills and confidence in public speaking • Gain experience and confidence within a Higher Education setting (attendance at lectures and training etc) • Support with exploring further work or educational opportunities after the mentoring project has finished. Positive images Working alongside and involving our 3 young Roma mentors Document their experience as researchers and in higher education Ethos – to ensure that these young people maintain control over their own representation. Research Semi-structured interviews with 12 key stakeholders representing: • Local authorities/municipalities, • Law enforcement/judicial agencies, • Public and private sector employers, • Community representatives and advocates, • Social workers and • Representatives from NGOs and Roma-led community organisations.
