Engineers make a
World of Difference
Do you know who this guy is?

If you use a computer, his product is
something you probably use
everyday…

HINT:

It’s LARRY PAGE: co-founder
of GOOGLE

His net worth = $18.5 BILLION!

26TH Richest Man in the WORLD

Guess What? He’s an ENGINEER!
What about these guys???

Here’s a HINT:

Steve Chen & Chad Hurley:
Co-founders of YouTube

Recently sold YouTube to Google
for $1.65 BILLION!

Guess what?
They too are Engineers!
Allow Me To Introduce Myself…
My Name Is…
 The Type of Engineer I am is called…
 The Company I work for is…
 I’ve been an engineer for ….

What do Engineers DO?
Engineers today work on tomorrow’s problems

ENGINEERS make our world better
– Devising systems to control pollution
– Easing world hunger by developing hardier foods
– Helping find cures to cancer, AIDS and other diseases

ENGINEERS design solutions to our planet’s
most serious problems
– Help rebuild decaying cities
– Improve roadways, bridges and airports
What do Engineers DO?
Engineers today work on tomorrow’s problems

ENGINEERS design products that meet
human needs
– Huge power-generating systems
– Create components that run computers, TVs, iPods, etc.

ENGINEERS make our lives more comfortable
– Designing efficient transportation
– Improving working conditions through automation and
robotics
What Kinds of Engineers are there?

Computer / Electrical
Engineers

– Work with foods,
– Work with Computers
medicines, plastics, fuels
and Software

Mechanical and
Aerospace Engineers
– Work with cars,
planes, machines,
spacecraft

Biomedical Engineers
– Work with artificial
limbs and organs
Chemical Engineers

Civil Engineers
– Work with buildings,
roads, bridges, the
environment
AND
MANY
MORE!
What does it take to be an Engineer?
People who become Engineers:






Are CURIOUS about how things work
Are interested in working with other people
Are interested in serving human needs
Want to make things work better
Are able to communicate well
Are able to adapt to a changing environment
Sound like you???
Me as an Engineer
I became an engineer because…
 What I like best about engineering is…
 What I normally do at work is…
 One of my favorite projects was…

The Engineering Process
 Identify
and define a problem
 Analyze the problem
 Design and propose solutions
 Refine proposals
 Solve the problem
Engineer Activity
Now it’s time for a hands-on activity with the students!
After the activity is completed, continue with the slide show.

BEFORE ACTIVITY: Prepare the students
– Provide activity instructions and time limits
– Hand out materials
– # of students on each team (if appropriate)

AFTER ACTIVITY: Ask probing questions
– What was the problem we were trying to solve?
– What did we do to solve it?
– Did it work? Why or why not?
– Does the solution need to be changed or improved?
– What else did we learn?
Why be an Engineer?


Great variety and challenge in your work
Build or improve lasting and tangible products
Use your creativity to solve problems and help humankind
Work as a team with others
Lots of Job Opportunities
– Everywhere you look there are engineering jobs
