A team is:
“A collection of people working together
cohesively to achieve an agreed, desired
result, goal or outcome, in a way which
maximises the skills and talents of all the
members without compromising their
values or ethics”.
(Andrews, 2000, p.3)

The Culture of an Organisation
The culture of an organisation, such as a
team, is built around a pattern of shared
assumptions and seen in its system of
heroes, language, action, shared values,
happening, rituals, symbols, beliefs and
team myths. This culture impacts upon
team effectiveness and cohesion and must
be considered by the coach.
(McConnell, 2000)

Team Culture
Coaching is about people….
Coaches earn trust….
Successful coaches enable
motivation by building the
coach-player relationship before
anything else. It’s all about
people

What makes a winning team?

The team needs to know what
it’s doing and to have agreed
what its direction and expectations are.
www.brynmawr.edu

Individual team members need to be able to speak their minds
freely and with security, to say when they disagree or don’t
understand without feeling that it is personal

What makes a winning team?



Different team members need to bring
different skills to the team and as long as
everything you need is covered
somewhere in the team you can do it
There has to be a sense of belonging
The way that problems are explored and
decisions taken is on the basis of
conventions and processes that work and
are known to work
