ROLE OF THE SPECIAL TEAMS COACH
 Responsible for the quality and productiveness
of all special teams.
 Responsible for every organizational facet of
special teams.
 Responsible for all personnel and depth charts.
Head coach and trainer have veto power
regarding personnel usage.
 Responsible for all Bills schemes and game plans
and all opponent scouting.
 Responsible to teach and prepare the staff
members the techniques and schemes of their
area. Responsible for having staff members on
same page with special teams coach and other
staff members.
 Will run all presentations regarding scheme and
opponent scheme.
 Will coach all areas in film review but will rely
heavily on staff members to coach their position
off the film.
ROLE OF THE COORDINATORS
Take ownership in the coaching of your area. Add a
second voice and a primary presence to your area.
Bring added priority to that area in meetings and on
the field.
Sounding board, advice, ideas and motivational
methods of promoting your area.
ROLE OF THE STAFF
 Bring knowledge and priority to your area of
responsibility. Coach your area with firmness
and demand that the players do what we ask.
Hold your players accountable for executing the
techniques we seek.
 Get on the same page with Bobby April involving
the specifics of your area.
 Responsible to be in all meetings when your
area is in session. (Exception: When your duty
to offense or defense is of a conflicting nature).
 Coach your players off of the film.
 Advice, ideas and discussion on, “What way can
we improve” is a 24/7 proposition.
Statistical Overview
Many statistical areas are calculated in special teams
play. The Buffalo Bills will emphasis one critical
component in each of the six special team’s areas.
The key statistic emphasized in each phase will be
our greatest advantage in field position and in
scoring offense and scoring defense.







1. When fatigue sets in, will a starter be told to give up
a shift of special teams or at his regular position?
2. What happens when injuries require special team’s
players to start?
3. Inactive list priority regarding backup(s) who are
quality special team’s players to less qualified special
teams players who are backups?
4. Hang time priority in regards to punter importance
and evaluation?
5. Strength of assistant coach’s opinion regarding
special team’s personnel and playing time?
