Natural Language and Basic Search

Divides up the question and discards the noise words
– Can I use aspirin to treat heart disease

Elaborates (describing) the individual words and
phrases
– treat – therapy etc


Searches for the subject groups separately and together
Ranks the results
– Frequency of occurrence
– Proximity (words close together – like adj6)
– Closeness to the words in the question


5* and 4* - all question concepts (like Boolean AND)
3* and below (at least one concept missing)
Basic Search and Ovid Advanced Search

The purpose of Basic Search is to provide a reasonable number
of highly relevant, ranked choices from the most recent part of
the database

The purpose of Ovid Advanced Search is to offer an interactive
research type search across the entire selected database

The results in Basic search are ranked but tend to offer a
smaller number of broad references

The results from Ovid Advanced Search offer the option to
search the depth of the subject (explode) or be selective
(subheadings), and so tend to be more precise

You will often see around 500 results from a Basic Search – but
these will not all be 5 star results. A Basic Search is not like a
traditional Ovid search result.
Multidatabase Searching

Because the subjects are chosen from the OvidSP
lexicon (rather than the different thesauri). They work
equally across different databases.

The number of results taken from each DB will be
smaller because with more choices it’s easier to reach
the target number of relevant records (500).
Search Journals
Full-Text Searching

When you search full-text sources, you are
searching every single word, rather than
someone else’s idea of what the publication is
about.

Advanced search is limited to “exact match,
unless truncation or synonyms are added.
