POPAT
An Introduction
to POPAT
What is POPAT?
POPAT
is a new approach to
phonics teaching with which
pupils of all ages and abilities
learn to speak clearly, read,
write and spell
The
programme is available in
both English and Welsh
How is it different?
POPAT teaches the
segmentation of words
into single sounds directly
without using letters
Why is it effective?
POPAT is a synthetic
programme that improves
listening attention and
enables the link between
phonemes and graphemes
to be learnt rapidly
The POPAT Programme
POPAT begins at pre-letter
phonological awareness
level, through to the complex
phoneme/grapheme
relationships of English
orthography
The POPAT Programme cont.
 POPAT
is quiet and gentle. It starts by asking
children to listen to small sounds and pick
them out from among others.
 It
goes on to quickly forge permanent links
between speech sounds and letters.
 Later
still it makes clear the phonemic
structure of words at which point four and
five year old children will write spontaneously
POPAT & SEN
•
POPAT is a highly successful diagnostic
teaching programme for all learners
with Special Educational Needs
•
It is particularly helpful for those
children who have or have had
speech and language difficulties, but
may also be used with other children
who experience difficulties with the
acquisition of this skill
Foundation POPAT
• Helps very young or developmentally
delayed children develop the
symbolic understanding needed to
access Standard POPAT, or any other
early literacy programme.
• Supports the development of
integrated attention control which is
synonymous with "school-readiness"
Foundation POPAT cont.
Foundation POPAT teaches and develops, through
structured and graduated activities the following
key pre-literacy skills:

the ability to recognise that an object can be
represented in a variety of formats e.g. a photo,
model or drawing is a symbol of that thing

the ability to recognise that line drawings can
be symbols representing sounds as well as
things that can be seen
These skills are needed so that in later games the
children will understand that drawings and letters
can be used to represent sounds and speech
sounds

Sharing Good Practice
 We
currently have two members of staff
who are training to be accredited POPAT
trainers
 Through
NSP funding we will be able to
offer training for staff in the POPAT
programme
Please discuss this with your headteachers
and feedback to us
