Swish, boom, bam…words whose sounds tell us a lot about themselves. They
are examples of the poetic term, onomatopoeia. Words whose sounds suggest
their meanings are onomatopoeic. To form onomatopoeic words, connect
letters in the adjacent boxes below. You may use the same letter twice in a row
or as often as needed to help form a word. Find ten words in the grid, and
you’re good; find sixteen or more, and you’re a champion!
Tuesday, September 29th Warm-up
“Cptn! M cptn!”
Don’t be confused by the activity’s title. It is the title of Walt
Whitman’s poem, “O Captain! My Captain!,” dedicated to
Abraham Lincoln. Obviously, the vowels are missing. The
same holds true for these 17 words that are synonyms for the
word leader. See if you can add in the vowels, and figure
them out!
