Conducting The Controlled
Assessment
• Assign a 45 min - 1hr session for the
writing assessment
• Supervised by a teacher under exam
situation
• Can bring in notes form, stimulus, and
dictionary (Not drafts!)
• Write on any A4-size paper

•Varied stimuli for different students
•Preferably not in Q & A form
•Check that the student understands

The Notes-form (CA4)
• Plan for the essay – bullet points, mind-map
• No sentences, paragraphs or drafts directly copied
into essay
• Word limit:
– 30 English words or
– 50 Chinese Characters or
– 30 Chinese Characters + 20 English words
– Pin-yin is regarded as English
– Can add 5 small diagrams if needed.

Below 100 characters, content marks
will be severely affected
No upper limit – no penalty nor credit
for excessive writing

• Proofread and correct mistakes
• Encourage neat and correct character writing
• Do not miss any dots / strokes or miss-place them
• Do not split 1 character into 2 halves and place in
different squares

Sample 4 – A Birthday party
上星期六是我好朋友小玉的生日,所以我們晚上去她家
吃晚飯,一起慶祝她十七歲的生日。雖然她請我們吃晚飯,
但是生日會下午兩點就開始了。在她家有很多人,有的是她
的朋友,有的是她姐姐的朋友,還有的是她的家人,一共有
一百人左右。那天出太陽,天氣非常好。大家都穿夏天的衣
服。客廳裡有粉紅色的氣球,公園裡有五顏六色的花,真漂
亮!
我們吃了很多好吃的東西。我最喜歡吃的東西是她媽媽
做的烤羊肉串,好吃極了!除了羊肉以外,我們也吃了炒麵
和米飯。晚飯以後大家先喝茶,然後一邊聽音樂一邊跳舞。
最後我們吃蛋糕,祝小玉生日快樂。切蛋糕的時候,小玉說
她希望明年同學們都會上有名的大學。
我覺得那真是一個又快樂又有意思的生日慶祝會。
