U.S Tax Code
•
•
•
The US tax code makes special provisions for nonprofit groups approved by the IRS to be exempt
from paying income tax.
Contributions to a 501(c)(3) organization can be
claimed against income tax but donations to a
501(c)(4) entity cannot.
From a fundraising point of view, it is harder to
raise money for a 501(c)(4) group, because
individuals cannot deduct the contribution from
their income tax.
Show Me The Money
•
•
With a Not for Profit, any money that is left
after the organization had paid its bills is
put back into the organization.
Of the 1.4 million nonprofit organizations
registered, half a million collected more
than $25,000 in gross receipts.

Value of Volunteering
"It's absolutely important to keep people
engaged to a cause. We want to make them
feel connected to their cause, but also see
them as future donors having the opportunity to
give to the organization later in life. If they
give, it may be because the experience they
had while they were younger."--CNCS Chief
Strategy Officer
The Volunteer Life-Cycle
Generation X
"Once stereotyped as skeptical and disengaged, Generation X is
showing signs of optimism that they can make a difference in
their communities through service as they become more
connected to local networks through their careers and their
children. Gen X members have more than doubled their
volunteer rate between 1989 and present day."

Volunteers should always be recognized for their
contributions to an organization.
Being rewarded does not only satisfy the
