Article 5 Quality of the interpretation and translation
1. Member States shall take concrete measures to ensure
that the interpretation and translation provided meets the
quality required under Article 2(8) and Article 3(9).
2. In order to promote the adequacy of interpretation
and translation and efficient access thereto, Member
States shall endeavour to establish a register or
registers of independent translators and interpreters
who are appropriately qualified…

Member States meeting within the Council fostering the
implementation by Member States of the right to
interpretation and to translation in criminal proceedings
(6) Member States should organise appropriate training
structures for interpreters and translators. The training
should include, for example, language skills as well as
training in criminal law and criminal procedure, police,
court and prison practice.
(7) This training should be provided before
registration/accreditation of interpreters and translators.
Member States should have a system of continuous
professional development to allow interpreters and
translators to keep their skills up to date.

(10) Member States should ensure that there is a system
of registration for accredited/certified interpreters and
translators.

accredited/certified interpreters and translators carry
out interpretations and translations

Recommendation II: Training:

Member States should provide appropriate training both
for new and already practising legal interpreters and
translators:
Such training should lead to a nationally recognized
professional certification and be accredited by a
recognized authority
Efforts should be made to develop equivalent training
throughout the EU to ensure mutual trust and
cooperation.

Practice should be an integral part of the training

the use of only registered legal interpreters made mandatory
