Brings together HESA and other data sources
Supplied through the web to the subscribing individuals
own desk
Permits an institution to define and supply their own
reports/analysis
Significantly cuts down on time spent in data extraction
activity
Explains data issues and problems when using time line
analysis
Immediacy of data; reduced waiting time for the

Using HEIDI (1)
Where we were….
• Ad hoc access to HEIDI across the University
• Used to obtain data for benchmarking and competitor analysis
(mainly for Senior Management and Council)
• No consistency in the way the data was being used and reported

Using HEIDI (2)
Where we are now…
• Established a HEIDI User-group to discuss common issues and
share good practice
• Set up clear processes for giving access to new users (including
support/training)
• Carried out an audit of how different teams are using HEIDI (or not!)

Using HEIDI (3)
What we plan to do next…
• Establish a set of useful reports/data extracts that can be accessed
by all users
• Common data definitions (e.g. the data used for calculating income
per FTE)
• Incremental roll-out across the University

Issues Encountered
• HEIDI is not a reporting tool
 Provides access to wide range of data in one place
× Does not have functionality to create sophisticated reports
• Can’t group or organise the reports created
• Chart options and functions are limited (easier to export to Excel and
manipulate)
• Limitations of the data
