Great leaders = Great schools
NEW LEADERS
INFORMATION SESSION
2011-2012 Recruitment and Admissions Season
Vision & Mission
Vision
We envision a day when there is educational excellence and equity across
America - when our country’s public schools ensure that every student is
prepared for success in college, careers and citizenship.
Mission
Our mission is to ensure high academic achievement for all children,
especially students in poverty and students of color, by developing
transformational school leaders and advancing the policies and practices
that allow great leaders to succeed.

What we know
There is a pressing need for great leadership within our nation’s
underperforming schools.
5-year-olds from low-income communities have one-fourth
the vocabulary of their mid-income peers.
By 4th grade, African-American and Latino students are, on
average, nearly three academic years behind their white
peers.
Nearly 50% of all public school students of color
do not graduate from high school.
Roughly one in 10 young male high school dropouts is in jail
or juvenile detention.
Roughly one in 35 young male high school graduates is
in jail or juvenile detention.

What we believe
New Leaders holds five core beliefs and values
Every student can achieve academically at high
levels.
"What I'm most
proud of…
All adults must take personal responsibility for
student learning and achievement.
Great schools are led by great principals.
With access to outstanding public education, all
students can unlock their fullest potential in the
classroom and in life.
Delivering high-quality public education to all
students is critical to a just society.
…is being part of a school
in which 100% of our
students were accepted
to four-year colleges.”
Paul Bambrick-Santoyo
New Leaders Principal

What concerns us
Many of our nation’s schools fail to provide every student with
great leadership.
Across the country, a small number of classrooms
and schools are demonstrating high academic
achievement for every student. Our society’s greatest
challenge is that this kind of success is not being
accomplished at scale, especially in high need
schools.
Drawing upon the strength of our mission, the drive,
energy, and expertise of our national staff and school
leaders, and the momentum we have gained since our
inception, New Leaders is well-positioned to address
this challenge.

Common Questions (2 of 3)
What does a typical day at Summer Foundations look like?
Foundations is an intense and inspiring learning experience with
classes beginning early and work often stretching into the evening.
Residents attend sessions with faculty from 8AM until approximately
4PM.
Sessions may include discussions, small group work, lectures and
presentations. On some afternoons, Residents participate in
case-study groups, peer-led presentations, optional discussion
sessions, and/or book talks.
Evenings may be devoted to reading, assignments, special
presenters and/or preparation for class. Some afternoons,
evenings, and weekends are free of any scheduled activities so
Residents can take breaks and leverage opportunities to connect with
one another.
Summer Foundations runs from late June through late July. For
the last five Cohorts, it has been held on the campus of Boston
University, but the location for 2012 has not yet been determined.

Common Questions (3 of 3)
Will I have my administrative certification after my Residency?
Upon completion of the Residency year and city-specific requirements,
most New Leaders receive formal certification and licensure as
administrators in their respective states.
Each program site either has a university partner that recognizes the New
Leaders coursework that leads to administrative certification, or has been
formally approved by the city and state as a certifying program.
In all cases, we have mapped our curriculum to state standards and as long
as you successfully complete the requirements of the New Leaders
Residency, coursework, and weekly seminars, you will receive
certification.
Some program sites require that you pass additional state and/or district
assessments during or at the end of your residency to obtain certification.
Team members at our local program offices are available to provide more
detailed information.
