Lesson 1
Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The Convention of the Rights of the Child was adopted and opened for
signature, ratification and accession by General Assembly resolution 44/25 of
20 November 1989. It entered into force 2 September 1990, in accordance with
article 49.
The Convention sets out in a number of statements called articles, the rights
which all children and young people up the age of 18 should have. The right
should apply to young people everywhere whether they live, in rich or poor
country.
Russia agreed to the Convention in 1989.

The right to be protected from discrimination. States parties shall respect and ensure
the rights set forth in the present Convention to each child within their jurisdiction
without discrimination of any kind, irrespective of the child’s or his parent’s or legal

State Parties recognize that every child has the inherit right to life.
20 mln.living children around the world have been forced from
their homes by war.
300,000 children worldwide are exploited as soldiers in around 30
armed conflicts, 10% of these children are as young as 7.
There are 2.1 billion children in the world, 600 million of them
live in poverty.
120 million children around the world work full-time.

Writing an Interview
Conduct an interview with a member of your family about their time at school.
You’re going to ask them questions about their schooldays.
Before you start your interview prepare about ten questions to ask them. Write them
down in advance so you don’t forget them. Try and make questions interesting and
try and avoid questions that will just produce “Yes” and “No” answers.
Bring your written version of the interview into school.

The Right to Health Care
HEALTH(n)- state of being well and free from illness.
Do you know that only 13% of the population smoke in the USA, but in Russia- more
than 76% 400.000 people die in Russia every year as a result of smoking. Smoking is a
serious risk. Think twice before starting.
There are lots of different ways to say no when someone offers you a cigarette.

the best ideas?
•In America, missing teens’ faces are printed on milk cartons.
•In the UK, a major supermarket chain now posters of missing children in their stores.
•In the UK, motorway signs will display the names of missing teens.
•Charities send teams of careworkers to music festivals to look for missing teens.
•Careworkers go to runaway hotspots. They listen to runaways’ stories and give them
cards with telephone numbers they can call if they are scared.
