Science and the Environment
Part 4 of 4
Mrs. Delaup
Abney Elementary-4th grade
1. What do humans have a
responsibility to do?
• Humans have a responsibility to take
care of or preserve the environment.
2. What does conserve mean?
• Conserve
means to
protect our
resources
as well as
use them
wisely.
3. What is “Reduce-ReuseRecycle?”
REDUCE-REUSE-RECYCLE
is a conservation plan that all humans should live by!
We need to REDUCE or lessen
the amount resources we use; such as
water.
•
• We need to REUSE items such as
grocery bags.
• We need to RECYCLE materials such
as paper, glass, aluminum, and plastic so
that the materials can be REUSED to
make other resources!
4. What happens when we recycle
products?
• When we recycle
products, we help
conserve energy because
less energy is needed to
make products from
other recycled products
than from raw materials.
• We also help protect
ecosystems because we
need less land for trash
landfills.
5. What is preservation?
• The protection of an area is called
preservation.
6. What does the government do
to help preserve ecosystems?
• The government helps preserve
ecosystems by making laws and setting
up protected areas.
7. How does using a shoe box to
store letters and pictures help
protect the environment?
• Reusing the shoe
box helps keep trash
out of landfills and
reduces the need
for another box
made from more
natural resources.
