Actions to be taken if YOU discover a fire
Raise the alarm - operate the nearest call point.
Ensure switchboard is informed - Dial 3333 give
location of fire.
All persons to be moved from immediate danger.
Check all persons are accounted for.
Close all doors and windows where possible.

Tackle the fire if safe to do so using the fire fighting
equipment available.
Hearing the alert
• Help prepare patients for evacuation –
take direction from the nurses.
• Close all doors and windows.
• Help check all persons are accounted for.
• Remain on alert - await further instructions.

Patients are evacuated from the affected
area to a place of safety on the same
level:
• Faster evacuation – no stairs in initial
stages
• Possible continuation of treatment
• Further evacuation may not be required
FIGHTING THE FIRE
THE PRIORITY IN ANY FIRE INCIDENT IS TO
ENSURE THE SAFETY OF YOURSELF AND
PATIENTS FIRST.
IF IN DOUBT, GET OUT AND
LEAVE THE FIRE FIGHTING TO
THE EXPERTS.

• Pull the safety pin or clip
• Aim nozzle/horn at base of fire
• Squeeze handles together

How does the building protect

Hospital buildings fire safety systems include
•COmpartmentation – reduces fire spread
•Fire detection – alerts you to fire
•Fire suppression (sprinklers) – contains a fire
•Exits and escape plans – create safe routes

•Emergency lighting – illuminates safe routes
How can you reduce the risk of fire ?
Some simple preventative measures:
• Switch off electrical equipment when not in use.
• Keep to the no smoking policy
• Safe work practices – assess your own risk
• Keep work areas tidy and free from obstructions
• Do not overload sockets (3 amp/13 amp rule)
