Fare policy
• Principle:To pay for records libraries contributed
and to charge for records libraries downloaded.
– No pay for Holdings data at present, only for
bibliographic data (full records)
– No charge for searching and downloading simple
records, but full records
Search title “Dream of the Red Chamber”. Don’t
need to pay fees to browse simple records
Need to pay fees to download full records.
Three kinds of workflow for catalogers
• Only using local library automatic system (LAS)
• Mainly using CALIS Online Cataloging Client
• Side-by-side using local library automatic
system (LAS) and CALIS Online Cataloging
Client
The first kind of work flow
• Only using local library automatic system(LAS)
– The key is the local system integrated with CALIS Online
Cataloging control component. The work flow doesn’t implement
untill CALIS Online Cataloging plug-in is embedded in the local
library automatic system.
– Origin: The data ought to be uploaded on principle of CALIS and its
uploading work flow by member libraries.
– Advantage: The catalogers only use one client.
– Shortage: Local Programs must be changed by vendors according to
the need of CALIS.
– The mode is used widely by most member libraries.
Cooperation with venders
• To carry out the first work flow and provide convenience
to catalogers, it is need to cooperate with LAS venders.
• The following LAS systems have integrated with CALIS
plug-in by now.

– Sirsi (operated to develop a Control component of JAVA
version)
The second kind of work flow
• Mainly using CALIS Online Cataloging Client
– Some libraries without fulfilled Z39.50 function integrated in local
library automatic system maybe adopt this kind of mode. The data
only being uploaded and downloaded by the CALIS Online
Cataloging Client from union cataloging databases can be saved as
an ISO 2709 file, and then transferred to local library databases.
– Advantage: It is not easy to make mistake.
– Shortage: The course is slow with more processes. The
data can not be real time searched in the local system.
– Apparently a few libraries use this kind of work flow.
The third kind of work flow
• Side-by-side using local library automatic system and
CALIS Online Cataloging Client
– The data is searched from CALIS databases and local library
database by CALIS clients.
– Advantage: Data can be real time searched in local library system
with few faults.
– Shortage: The catalogers must be with high vocational level to use
two clients.
– A few libraries, especially contributing data, use this
kind of work flow, such as Peking University, TsingHua
University, Wuhan University, East China Normal
University etc…

– Users can raise requirements for ILL to their library
directly across integrating CALIS ILL system.
OPAC
• For catalogers and librarians who is charged with ILL
– Authorized users can download data in ISO
2709. It is convenience for small libraries and
libraries without smoothly internet.
– Dealing with users’ requirements of ILL
(usually for no digital data)
• New edition of OPAC is the basic to establish the regional
centers union catalog.

o Marc field 920 can give the brief information of location code,
ways of ILL, etc.
o without circulating information in each library
– Solutions
o CALIS provides interface requirement
o By cooperation with LAS venders, connection from CALIS
OPAC to local automatic OPAC is fulfilled to show the real
time holding information.
o At present, 汇文system has fulfilled the portal.

• Four ways to download data
– From Z Server of CALIS Administrative Center
o Libraries of Level D will not be permitted to download data
from Z Server of CALIS Administrative Center in the future.
– From OPAC of CALIS Administrative Center
o All member libraries are authorized to download data.
– From Z Server of Regional Information Center
o Libraries of Level D in the region are authorized to download
data.
– From OPAC of Regional Information Center
o Libraries of Level D in the region are permitted to download
data.

– Member libraries who are authorized to upload bibliographical
data or local holding information
– Catalogers must work on the union cataloging databases of
Administrative Center.
• Without authorization to upload data
– Member libraries who are authorized to download data only
– Only being authorized to download data from the Regional
Information Center databases
– At present being permitted to download data from Administrative
Center databases
• For one member library
– A record need pay only when it is downloaded for the first time.
Later downloading this record is free.

• There is no regional center in north China.
• All member libraries in north China are
authorized to upload and download data
from Administrative Center servers.
• Presently the South-east China Regional
Information Center has begun to provide
services to libraries of Level D.

Solutions to add local holdings
• Problem: Libraries of Level D are not authorized
to upload the holding information so that it is
limited for developing their interchange among
libraries within a province.
• Solutions
– Member libraries with authorization to upload data
o Just like now, adding holding informatin in MARC field 920
– Member libraries without authorization to upload data
o From January, 1, 2006, if a record is downloaded by the library,
the system automatically add this library’s holdings.
o Holding information are saved in a database, not showed in
MARC field 920.
Provincial union bibliographic database
• Coverage of data
– MARC field 920 contains holdings data in Chinese/western
language/Japanese from member libraries of the province.
• In the future
– If a record is downloaded by the libraries, their holding
information will be added automatically .
– Mirror data will be more and more in the databases of
provincial union catalog.
– To promote the development of member libraries and
interchanges among libraries.

• Authentication exam
– way:remote exam and check
– Operating successfully for 3 times
o Chinese level 3 catalogers exams for 2 times
o Western language level 3 catalogers exams for 1 times
o 126 catalogers participated exams, 100 catalogers in 72
libraries passed the exams. And 75 catalogers in 66 libraries
passed chinese authentication exam, 27catalogers in 27
libraries passed western language cataloging authentication
exam.
o advantage:help to improve cataloger’s work abilities.
