- Participate in all activities to the best of your ability and respect others.
In the Zone – Crossing the line
Games
5 Week Overview
- Continue to play crossing the line games in practical lessons,
examining different strategies , tactics and movement skills in
these games, whilst integrating event management.
- Event Management: Personal skills required in event
management, structures & formats of different events and
roles in event management. Also starting to examine how to
plan, conduct and evaluate different events.
- Strategies and techniques: Designing and implementing
different game strategies, analysing and evaluating gameplay
components such as strategies, tactics and movement skills
(video analysis) and also designing different games to play in
practical lessons.
Lesson 1: Roles in Event
Management & Intro to Strategy
and Tactics
What are some roles in event
management?
-
Coach
Referee
Scorekeepers/Statistician
Marketing Roles (Publicist/Media Rep, Cameraperson, Photographer)
Gameplay Analyst
Movement Skill Analyst
Equipment Manager
-
Caterer
Security
Financial Roles
Volunteers
Duties/Role
Coach
- Organise and manage training
sessions and game warm-ups
- Assist teams with game Strategy
and tactics
- Work with game play and skill
analysts to identify team
strengths and weaknesses and
areas where their team could
improve
- Provide motivation and positive
reinforcement to team players
- Organises team substitutions
In our practical lessons their will be two coaches, one for each team.
Referee
Role/Duties
- Despite not always being fan
favourites, referees are essential
in most sports .
- Responsible for enforcing game
rules.
- Responsible for making the
tough decisions so that the game
is played fairly, runs smoothly
and player safety is maintained.
In our practical lessons their will be two referees.
Scorekeepers/Statisticians
Role/Duties
- Keep track of scores during
gameplay.
- Keep a record of teams scores over
the course of a season.
- Keep track of individual
performances e.g. no of touches,
no of runs, try assists, kicks etc.
- Provides data to the coach on
individual player performance.
In our practical lessons their will be two scorekeepers.
Marketing RolePublicist/Media Rep
Role/Duties
- Create publicity for the event (TV, radio,
newspaper, magazines).
- Speak to members of the media about
the game/event.
- In our practical lessons we will have one publicist, who will have the
responsibility to write a half-page media report based on the game (e.g. who
scored points, Most valuable player, what the coaches were doing, different
teams strategies etc.). When writing your report you should try and focus on the
positives of the game and what players did well. (In this role you can use your
phone to write the report)
Marketing Role- Cameraperson
Role/Duties
In our practical lessons their will be 2 camera
people. It will be their role to film team
gameplay (e.g. trying to capture the whole
game) and also individual performances (e.g.
taking a close up of someone throwing a
ball). It is important that you undertake this
role responsibly (e.g. no swearing or making
silly comments whilst filming) and make sure
you try and get the best footage possible as
we will be watching it back in future lessons.
Gameplay and Movement
Skill Analysts
Role/Duties
- Analyse Gameplay (both offence and
defence) providing valuable info to the coach
and team players (e.g. Strategy and tactics,
decision making in the game, communication
in the game etc.)
- Analyse player movement skills during the
game and practice sessions , to provide
valuable info to the coach and team players
to assist them in improving their skills.
In our practical lessons their will be 2 analysts (1 Gameplay & 1 Skill).
Equipment Manager
Role/Duties
- Make sure that all the
necessary equipment for the
event is organised and set up.
- Pack up and store equipment
after the event
In our practical lessons their will be 1 equipment manager, who
chooses two other class members to help them carry and set up
equipment. When they are not setting up equipment they can assist
someone else in the role of their choosing.
Strategy and Tactics
What is a strategy and what are
tactics? Think of/Research your
favourite sport and provide an
example of a strategy.
Action Concepts
Concepts/principles that help players
understand how to play games and sports and
inform team’s strategies and tactics
Offence
Defence
-Move to create or receive a pass
-Reduce the number of passes required to
reach the scoring zone
-Vary the rhythm and speed of attacking
moves
- Alternate between long and short passes
-Change the direction of play/move in one
direction and release the ball in another
- Use the depth and width of the field
- Put immediate pressure on the ball carrier and
receiver
-Delay the attack when defenders are outnumbered
-Play to a player an area or a mix
-Communicate with teammates in defence
-Increase the number of players in the middle of the
field. Why would a defence do this?
-Look for the intercept
-Position yourself on likely ball trajectories.
Principles of Strategy and Tactics
Deception and Surprise
Making a play to trick the opponent/opposition into
making a bad decision/response.
Teamwork and Competence
Working together as a team to achieve a common goal,
with each player taking on and understanding their role
in the team.
Opportunity
Taking advantage of an opponent’s errors or
opportunities that present themselves in the game.
Improvement
Players will become better at understanding play/team
strategies as the game progresses.
Back-up plan
Having a plan/strategy that can be used if the original
strategy isn’t working.
Conservation/Protection
When a team changes their intent from trying to
progress their score, to protecting a lead or conserving
their energy.
Next theory lesson:
-Personal Skills required in event management
-Designing strategies and tactics
Prac lesson:
-One team will adopt the different event management roles. 2 teams will play the
game. Teams will rotate every 15 minutes. Team scores will be recorded with the
winning team at the end of the 5 weeks receiving a prize.
-Trying to apply the action concepts and principles of strategy and tactics in the game

Designing Strategies

Group 6: Financial Planning/Budgeting
Designing Game Strategies
Similar to event management, in games and sports, individual
players have different qualities and strengths that they bring to a
team (e.g. Skill level, fitness, concentration, speed, height etc.).
These are called a team’s resources and should be taken into
account when designing a strategy.
Task: In your groups design a game strategy (e.g. player
positioning, who’s going to throw the ball, decoy runners, setplays etc.) that you could implement in Flag-football. You should
consider all the strengths and skills of individual players in your
team and how you can best utilise them in your strategy.
Next theory lesson…
- Structures and formats of different events
- Analysing and improving movement skills
- Designing games that focus on improving
movement skills
