Why are we more fire safe now than in 1066? What happened in 1066? The Great Fire of London Picture from http://www.london-fire.gov.uk. The fire started in a baker’s shop in Pudding Lane on 2nd September 1666 Burning around 13,200 houses, 84 churches and 44 company halls. Picture from http://www.london-fire.gov.uk. In 1666 naked flames and fire were used to cook. Now we have electric or gas cookers which are much safer. You still need to be careful around the cooker, but it is much safer than in 1666. In 1666 candles and flames were used for lighting. Now we use electricity for lamps and lights which is much safer. You still need to be careful around lights, lamps and electricity, but it is much safer than in 1666. In 1666 houses were made of wood and other materials that easily burnt. They were built very close to each other. Now most houses are made of brick and do not burn so easily. Fire ! In 1666 the only way to know there was a fire was to see or hear the fire, or hear people shouting. Now we have smoke alarms in our homes which will beep as soon as it smells smoke. In 1666 the fire was tried to be put out using water from the river and pulling down or blowing up the houses. Picture from http://www.london-fire.gov.uk. Now we have specially trained firefighters with lots of specialised equipment. If there is a fire you should get out, stay out and call 999. Following the Great Fire of London, Fire Insurance companies were set up. Firemen from each company wore a different colour uniform. To show you had paid your fire insurance you had a “Firemark” on your building. If the firemen did not see a mark from their insurance company they went away, leaving the fire to burn. Remember you need to: Get out, stay out, call 999 It is important to be fire safe But hopefully there will never be a fire so big again
