and there is a crowd, have a seat in 604, diagonal from my office,
if there is not a meeting there.
If you are the only one waiting to see me, duck your head
in so that I know that you are waiting!
The 6th floor bathroom is directly north of the elevator banks, and
is coed, so knock before entering, and lock after entering—unless
you prefer bathroom visitors.
If you plan on discussing your term paper, and we might discuss a
topic that is at least semi-confidential, you may want to close my
office door to a crack.
If we meet over lunch time, bring along your lunch if you like, as I
may also be nibbling.

Discussion Topic #8

#8 Instruction Implications of Piaget:
MAJACS I (Summary-Evaluation due on Monday,
September 26th). Assume that you are a junior
high instructor. You are intrigued with Piaget’s
theory, and are attempting to integrate his theory
into your teaching practices. The text suggests
some implications of Piaget’s theory for
instruction: (1) Communication and (2)
adolescents as knowing creatures (p. 112). What
does this mean, and what other implications can
you come up with from what you have learned
about his theory?

Issues

What do teen males and females want to know about
puberty from the opposite sex?
11
Puberty
A period of rapid physical maturation
involving hormonal and bodily changes
that take place primarily in early
adolescence.
 Takes place between 9 and 16
 Mediated in large part by
hormonal changes:



androgens
estrogens
Work as a negative feedback system with the
set point raised during puberty (see text, p.
84-85)

And This Is How It Works!
13
Girls are about 2 years
advanced over boys in
their journey through
puberty (e.g.,
pubertal growth
spurt).

trends in puberty are
such that if they
continue as they have
for past 100-200
years, girls will
experience menarche
at about the same
time they enter
nursery school--in
about 2250!

Relationships & Body Image


Puberty is oftentimes associated
with changes in the parentadolescent/child relationship.
Because of the many changes in
body characteristics, many
adolescents are preoccupied with
their bodies. Many adolescents
have body-image problems—
particularly girls.
16
17
Hormones & Attitudes


The surging of hormones during
puberty is linked to increases in
moodiness and negativity.
Menarche comes with a web of
positive (e.g., oncoming adulthood)
and negative (e.g., messiness)
attitudes.
18
Timing Factors


Atypical timing of puberty does
have consequences.
Pubertal changes, when paired with
other stress-inducing changes (e.g.,
school transitions), can produce a
variety of problems
19
