the environment, traditions and festivals of
Great Britain

to do a starting research into the peculiarities of the

General Information


Great Britain is an important
political, economic and
military world power.
It is a member of the
European Union, the UN or
the NATO.





The currency is a pound.
The population of Great
Britain is constantly changing
and makes about 60 million
people.

Great Britain is also called
the United Kingdom of Great
Britain and Northern Ireland.
The capital of Great Britain is
London.
Great Britain consists of four
historical provinces: England,
Wales, Scotland and Northern
Ireland.
The largest cities of Great
Britain are London,
Birmingham, Glasgow,
Manchester, Edinburgh,
Liverpool.
Geography



The area of the island is
244,820 square kilometres.
The east and south of the
island are marked by low,
rolling countryside, the
western and northern regions
are typically hilly.
In the British Isles there are
over 100 smaller islands,
most famous are Isle of Man,
Hebrides, Orkneys or
Shetland.





The island is situated on the
northwest of Europe.
It is the largest island of the
British Isles.
It is the largest island in
Europe and the 8th largest in
the world.
It is separated from Europe
by the English Channel.
Other bordering seas are the
Atlantic Ocean, the North
Sea, the Celtic Sea, St
George's Channel, and the
Irish Sea.

Animal World





Animal diversity is modest, as a
result of factors including the
island's small land area, the
effects of seasonal variability.
Great Britain has gone through
industrialisation and increasing
urbanisation.
100 species have become extinct
in the UK during the 20th
century.
There is an abundance of rabbits,
hares, hedgehogs.
Extinct large mammals include
the brown bear, grey wolf and
wild boar.
Nature




There is a wealth of birdlife
in Britain, 583 species in
total.
Well known bird species
include the golden eagle, grey
heron, kingfisher, pigeon,
sparrow, pheasant.
The island has a wide variety
of trees, including native
species of birch, beech,
hawthorn.
Other trees have been
introduced from other parts of
Europe and North America.

Every country in the United
Kingdom has its own national
flower.
The national flower of
England is the rose.
The national flower of
Scotland is a wild plant – a
thistle.
The Welsh emblem is a
vegetable or a flower – a leek
or a daffodil.
The national flower of
Northern Ireland is a
shamrock.

of England.
London, Windsor, Dover and
Brighton are situated here.
This region is famous for
Heathrow airport, the County
of Kent, resorts.
In Brighton you can take a
guided tour around the Royal
Pavilion.
You can go to the Brighton
Sealife Centre. It's set in a
stunning Victorian building
and is the oldest operating
aquarium in the world!
The Southwest





It is the region where the main
activity is farming.
Bristol and Bath are situated
here.
It is famous for Stonehenge and
the most westerly point «Land's
End».
Bath is famous for its Fashion
Museum.
It shows a world-class collection
of contemporary and historical
dress. The displays include 150
dressed figures to illustrate the
changing styles in fashionable
clothes from the late 16th
century to the present day.
East Anglia

This region is very flat.

The part called the Fens consists of miles of flat land with no trees or hedges.

Jump on your bicycle and explore England's Cycling Country, with some of the
best cycle routes suitable for everyone.

Put on your shoes and explore England's Easy Walking.

Take to the skies with gliding and hot air balloon flights.

Get onto coastal and inland waters, with some of the country's best sailing.
The Midlands

This region is known as an industrial part in the country.

Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool and Birmingham are situated here.

Stratford-upon-Avon and Oxford are connected with English culture.

The Selly Manor Museum represents the thirteenth-century house and the 14th to 16thC
half-timbered house with period furniture and fittings and authentic Tudor garden.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Glasshouse showcase over 7000 plants, shrubs and
trees including many rare species.
The North of England




This region has some of the wildest and loneliest parts of the
country and also some of the busiest industrial cities.
The main attractions are the Lake District, the cities of York and
Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
At Newcastle International Airport there are such shops as
Traveller, Dixons, Claire's Accessories, WH Smiths.
They offer fashionable clothing, footwear, accessories,
bestsellers, sweets, drinks, cute beads, sun hats and shades.
