What is technology?
Who are the people that
make technologies?
Let’s name some
examples of each!

Technology is anything made
by people that solves a
problem.

Challenge
Science vs. Engineering
SCIENCE – deals with the natural world
ENGINEERING – deals with anything built by people
to solve a problem. Often science and math are used.

Ask: What’s the problem? What have others done? What are the limits?
Imagine: What could be some solutions? Brainstorm ideas. Choose the best one.
Plan: Draw a diagram. Make a list of materials you will need.
Create: Follow your plan to create it. Test it out!
Improve: What worked? What did not? Make your design even better. Test it out!
What’s the problem
in the story?
Do you like to climb
trees like the lowercase letters do in the
story Chicka Chicka
Boom Boom? Your
challenge is to work
with your team to
design and build a
tree that will be
strong enough to
stand on its own and
hold letters!
Today it is your job to imagine how
you can use the materials to build
a tree that is strong enough to hold
letters.
Your second job is to work with
your teammates. You’ll have to
come up with a plan on how to
build your team’s tree!
Requirements
•
•
•
•
The tree must stand by itself and be as tall or taller than
a ruler
The tree must be made of at least two different
materials
The tree must have a trunk, branches, and leaves
The tree must be able to hold the letters and remain
standing
Limitations
•
•
•
The tree cannot be taller than the table
You can use no more than five different materials to
make the tree
You only have three feet of tape
Optional Materials:
Newspaper
Packing
Peanuts
Popsicle
Sticks
Pipe
Cleaners
Rubberbands
Unifix
Paper
cubes
Egg
Paperclips
Cartons
Plastic
Small/Big
Cups
Paper
Cereal
Cups
Boxes
Straws
Three Feet
of Masking
Tape

that is strong enough to stand
on its own and hold letters?
Imagine: Explore the materials. Think of
each part and write what material you’d
use. Draw an idea of how you can make
the tree strong enough to stand on its
own and hold letters.

Challenge Jobs
Builder – Draws the plan that the team agrees on.
Everyone else copies it. Gives teammates
directions on what to build for the tree.
Videographer – Takes pictures
(beginning/middle/end) and records the test.
Tester – Hangs the letters on the tree.
Presenter – Shares with the class the materials the
team chose and how the tree was built.
Plan: Meet with your team. Choose
the best idea, or use everybody’s
ideas to develop ONE plan.

Create/Test: Work together
and use your plan to create a
tree that stands on its own
and holds letters. Test out the
trees! Does your tree meet all
of the requirements?
Is our tree:
1. As tall as or taller than a ruler?.........................................................Yes or No
2. Shorter than the table?.....................................................................Yes or No
3. Made of 2 to 5 different materials?................................................ Yes or No
4. Made of a trunk, branches, and leaves?...................................... Yes or No
5. Able to hold all the letters and still stand?......................................Yes or No
6. Held together with three feet of tape or less?................................Yes or No
How many times did you circle YES? _____ / 6
Improve:
How could you make it better next time
(diagram or words)?
