Sterile Storage
Guidelines when setting up a
Sterile Storage Area
shelving must be 2-3 inches from the
wall
n shelving must be 8-10 inches from the
floor
n shelving must be 18-20 inches from the
ceiling
n

area must be dry
n humidity must not be less than 35% with
a maximun of 70%
n temperature must be approximately 72
degrees F
n no overhead plumbing
n

sterile and clean items must not be
stored under sinks
n patient care items must not be stored on
the floor
n area must be kept sanitary and free
from food, insects or vermin
n

items must be removed from external
shipping cartons before transfer into the
storage area because of high levels of
dust contamination on cartons and
crates
n closed-cabinets or covered storage
shelves are preferred for sterile items to
decrease the risk of dust accumulation
n

minimum 10 air changes per hour
through a system filtering the air to
render it dust free
n ceiling must be enclosed
n floors must be damp mopped
n air movement relationship to adjacent
area is negative
n

manufactures’ clean/sterile supplies
(clean processing area should not be in
this area but adjacent)
n if using a wire cart for storage, cover the
bottom shelves of the carts with an
impervious liner

The Storage area and carts for the
items need special care. It is important
to keep both the area and carts clean &
dust free. As with any cleaning, it is
necessary to perform the task frequently
and well
Tips to help you in the cleaning
of the Carts
wipe the cart or shelf well with a wet
cloth and the hospital approved
cleaning solution
n dry the cart well with a dry lint-free cloth
n wipe any bins following the same
procedure as for the shelves
n
Quality Improvement
Make a 5 question test on this topic and put in
staff file (OR,CS,Building & Housekeeping)
n Work with Housekeeping staff and develop a
check list to show when area has been cleaned
( mop,dust..)
n Housekeeping is a key player in making sure your
area is clean keep them in the loop
n You can never over train your staff the more
people you involve the better the outcome
n
