Once upon a time there lived a Russian artist.
His name was Ivan Bilibin
All his life he felt a keen interest
in old Russian history, painting
and folk art

character of Russian fairy - tale
The artist Victor Konashevich
The artist cooperated for many years with famous
children’s writer Kornei Chukovsky.
He created a world of fantasy and an amusing theatre in
bright colours.
Look how the artist pictured children’s tale, “The Telephone”.

The artist Yury Vasnetsov
Vasnetsov’s pictures are decorative: brilliant colours,
intricate ornamental design, and a coloured background
(pink, blue, yellow or red).
Examine the cover for Lev
Tolstoy’s fairy-tale, The Three
Bears.
Don’t you get the impression
that the three bears have only
sat down on this bench for a
minute.
Yury Vasnetsov paid great attention to the appearance of
a book as a whole. His illustrations normally take up a
whole page.
As you read this story, note how the artist uses colours,
how he draws the bears’ house, how he varies large and
small volumes in his colourful story of the three bears
As you read these stories about the artists,
the fairy-tales themselves and as you look
at the illustrations, you will go on a
remarkable journey to the Land of Colours
and Magic.
Bon voyage!
