How do I get there from here?
In general students have 2 options:
• Doing your Practicum at your place of employment
• Doing your practicum at a new/alternate community
site
If you Choose to do your Practicum at your
place of employment:
• Discuss your plan with the Agency Director
• Your Practicum has to be in a program different than
your day to day employment
• Your Field Instructor must be someone other than
your day to day supervisor
• Your Field Instructor must have a degree in Social
Work
If you Choose to do your Practicum at an alternate
community site:
• You should treat your search for a Practicum site as you would
a job search
• Identify a Field of interest
• Research the Agency/Organization of interest
• Update your resume and covering letter
• Covering letter should identify your passion/interest in the
agency
• Make personal contact with the agency
• Be prepared to go for a personal interview
• We are prepared to intervene at any point in this process
While in Field the student is expected to demonstrate:
 The ability to take a comprehensive approach to the practice of
social work.
 A grasp of knowledge for practice, and the theories and
principles that guide it.
 Commitment to carry out social work activities in accordance
with ethical value based practice and continued professional
development.
 Use of a range of assessment and relationship skills needed to
plan and to intervene effectively; and
 Commitment to social inquiry that includes a critical approach to
theory and practice.
