and carried out its assembly at Roots
4 Peace in Ohsweken at Six Nations.
The canoe is named Mino Dodem
(meaning "Good Spirit“).
About the Ontario Arts Council (OAC)





The OAC has been in existence for over 40 years.
Arm’s-length agency of the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and
Culture.
In 2009-2010, the Ontario Arts Council funded 1,697 individual
artists and 1,013 organizations in 236 communities across
Ontario for a total of $51.8 million.
Offers 57 programs for individuals and organizations.

About OAC Grants
OAC provides grants in three (3) ways:
By Artistic Discipline
For example: Visual arts, media arts, crafts, dance,
literature, music, theatre, multidisciplinary arts…
By Activity
For example: Arts education, community arts, professional
development, organizational development, touring,
residencies…
By Designated Programs
Aboriginal arts, francophone arts, Northern arts.

You are a recognized, practicing
artist

Northern Arts: Eligibility (1)
Requirements for applicants to Northern Arts that are
individuals, collectives and ad-hoc groups:



Individuals or members of collectives or groups must have
lived in one of the three Northern regions in Ontario for at
least one year before the application is made, AND live in
Northern Ontario for at least eight months of the year.
At least 50% of the members of the collective or group must
be located in Northern Ontario
Ad-hoc groups, collectives or unincorporated organizations
must operate on a not-for-profit basis and be mainly
composed of professional artists or arts professionals

located within Northern
Ontario
Must be a not-for-profit
arts organization

Ineligible Activities
The following are NOT ELIGIBLE for project funding:
Events/activities that take place before the deadline date
Events/activities that have been completed before the results of the
competition have been announced
Fundraising activities, competitions and contests
Capital expenses, equipment purchases, salaries, etc.
Business ventures
Colleges, universities and municipalities

shows us what you do as an artist.
You can send us your work on CD, DVD, on
paper or VHS. We don’t accept slides.

dancing, your choreography, etc., or
programs from works you’ve been in or
created…
Musicians… songs you’ve recorded,
lyrics you’ve written, programs from
concerts you’ve been in…

Multidisciplinary artists… video, images,
or sound recordings of work you’ve
created or been involved with…

Writers… samples of your writing, books
you’ve written, short stories, poems,
reviews of your writing by others…


Theatre artists… video or images of you
acting, directing, etc., or programs from
plays you’ve been in or created, script
you’ve written…
Arts educators… examples of your work
as an artist AND “learner support
material” – examples of work that others
have created in your workshops, that
show what they have learned from you…

Community artists… examples of your
work you’ve created before with
communities or groups of non-artists.


paintings, sculptures, craft, jewelry,

Support Material / Groups and Organizations
If you are proposing a project that involves many
artists, you need to send support material for all the
artists involved, or at least four. For example:
Music festivals…
Send songs from the musicians who will play at the festival.
Literary festivals…
Send writing samples from the authors who will read at the festival.
Exhibitions…
Send pictures of work of artists who will be part of the exhibition.
Collective creations…
Send support material to show the work of the artists involved

Your application form (found at
arts.on.ca) is “fillable.” You can fill
it out on your computer, save it
and work on it later.
Call your Northern consultant or
program officer well before the
deadline.
Get as many people as possible to
read your grant before submitting.
Ask the consultant or officer if they
look at drafts of applications.

Find out if anyone has applied to
the funder/program before – ask
them to be your mentor.

Be detailed but concise. Don’t
repeat. Stay within the page limits!

Write with the passion you have for
the project, and edit with
objectivity.

When working on a budget, start
with expenses.

Give yourself lots of time to develop
your project and to fill out the
application.
