Chapter 2 Fall 2014
Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of
heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son
of God, born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
Through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation, he came down from
heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin
Mary, and became man.
Nicene Creed (cont.)
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the
third day in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand
of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the
living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who
proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the
Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has
spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I
confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look
forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the
world to come. Amen!
INTRODUCTION
Questions to Think About…
• What is supernatural revelation?
• Why does God reveal himself?
• How does God make it possible to know him?
What is Supernatural Revelation?
• In Supernatural Revelation, God “unveils” truths about
himself and man’s salvation that exceed natural capacity.
• In Divine Revelation, God reveals himself to people
directly through specific and particular individuals.
Why does God reveal himself?
• God draws human beings to himself because of his loving
magnanimity.
• God wants people to be capable of loving him, responding
to him, and loving him beyond their own human
capabilities would otherwise allow.

How does God make it possible to know
him?
• One can know God because he elevates the natural
intellect through grace so people can grasp the
supernatural truths he reveals through deeds and words.
• The message of truth can not be confused or corrupted
because when Christ established his Church he
guaranteed the assistance of the Holy Spirit. The Holy
Spirit guides the Church and the teaching authority
(Magisterium) when confirming the teachings of Christ
and applying those teachings to temporal situations.

THE TRUTHFULNESS OF
DIVINE REVELATION
Questions to Think About…
• How does one know if a revelation is from God?
• What are the motives of creativity?
• What is a miracle?
How does one know if a revelation is
actually from God?
• Because the content of revealed truth is not self evident,
God provides external evidence for believing the revealed
truths.
• These truths are called the motives of credibility.
What is a miracle?
• A miracle is an extraordinary and observable fact or action
performed by God that defies the laws of nature.
TEST ALL THINGS
Questions to Think About
• When have miracles occurred?
• How does the Church determine if a miracle has
occurred?
• What are the three most common categories of miracles?
When have miracles occurred?
God has worked miracles:
• As recorded in the Old Testament (ex. Parting of the Red
Sea)
• As recorded in the New Testament (ex. Raising of
Lazarus from the dead).
• Present day
• Video: Is Jesus still giving us signs today?
How does the Church determine if a
miracle has occurred?
• The Church requires a lengthy and rigorous process to
determine if a miracle has taken place.
1. Apparition-an investigation considers the possibility the
probability of a supernatural occurrence, the personal
qualities of the person receiving the vision, the content
of the message (if any) and the fruits of the revelation.
2. Healing-There must be an accurate diagnosis of a
permanent illness or infirmity by competent medical
authority, and the prognosis grim. The cure itself must
be immediate and complete and permanent. The
medical treatment must NOT be a contributing factor
into the healing.
Church’s Strict Guidelines- Why?
The Church has strict guidelines that a miracle has
occurred because:
• Some cases might be fraudulent.
• Some cases might be of natural origin.
• People could accuse Catholics of credulity or gullibility.
• The Church would rather have a miracle unrecognized
than falsely claim a natural phenomenon.
What is the three most common
categories of miracles?
• The three most common categories of miracles are:
1. Apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary
2. Miracles of the Eucharist
3. Miracles of Healing
Project
• You are to create a pamphlet of the three different types of
miracles.
• You must include ONE from each of these groups:
1. Apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary
2. Miracles of the Eucharist
3. Miracles of Healing
• You must give a brief summary of these groups.
• You must also provide at least one example of each of
these miracles. Summarize briefly and provide pictures to
your pamphlet.
• This will count as a test grade.
THE TRUTHFULNESS OF
DIVINE REVELATION
(PART 2)
Questions to Think About…
• How are prophecy, the experience of Christians, and the
Church motives of credibility?
• What is the role of freedom in the role of accepting
revelation as true?
How are prophecy, the experience of
Christians, and the Church motives of
credibility?
• Prophecy is a motive of credibility because prophets
speak in the name of God and their fulfilled prophesies
are signs of the truthfulness of their message.
• The Christian’s experience of Christ offers internal proof
of the truth of revelation because Christ sanctifies the
highest human apparitions.
• The propagation, sanctify, fruitfulness, unity, and stability
of the Church provide a motive of credibility for her divine
mission.
What is the role of freedom to accept or
reject the truthfulness of Divine
Revelation?
• People have the freedom to accept or reject the
truthfulness of Divine Revelation.

THE ACT OF FAITH

What are the qualities of faith?

intellect through which a truth revealed by God is believed
on the authority of God, who reveals it.
• Video: What is Faith?
What are the motives and objects of faith?
• The motive for faith is the authority of God, who reveals.
• The objects of faith are:
1. God, himself
2. all other supernatural faiths God wanted to reveal
