Cal Poly SLO, San Diego State, Long Beach, San Francisco State Senior Parent College Night University of California • • • • • 10 campuses but San Francisco is graduate only Bachelor, Master, and Doctorate degrees Research/theory based curriculums Competitive admissions with many highly selective campuses To be eligible: 3.0 GPA, A-G courses, SAT or ACT with Writing, personal statements • Not required/accepted: SAT Subject exams (some majors “highly recommend”), recommendation letters, transcripts • Application filing period: Nov 1 – Nov 30 (available Oct 1) • To apply: www.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply Senior Parent College Night Private and Out of State Schools • 75 private colleges and universities in California • 3,000+ colleges and universities in US (including public) • All vary in admission requirements and application deadlines MUST BE ORGANIZED! • Application requirements: application usually with essays and activities, official transcript, official test scores, letters of recommendation, and sometimes interview/portfolio • Almost 500 schools are part of the Common Application • Early Decision vs. Early Action vs. Restrictive Early Action • National commitment deadline: May 1 (no earlier!) Senior Parent College Night Letters, Forms & Deadlines • Most private schools require at least 1 letter of recommendation, from teacher or counselor • Many private schools require Secondary School Report form to be completed by the high school counselor • Before students can request letters and forms, students and parents must complete the Brag Packet • What is a Brag Packet? • Instructions are outlined in Guidelines for Requesting Counselor & Teacher Recommendation Letters click to download copy of the guidelines Senior Parent College Night Instructions… Guidelines for Requesting Counselor & Teacher Recommendation Letters (Click link above to download) Senior Parent College Night Counselor “Packets” • After you complete the Brag Packet and updated your “colleges I’m applying to” list… • Student must provide Mrs. Chi with the following: – 2 printouts of your college list from Naviance – Transcript fee for each school* on the list (CASH only) – If there are schools not accepting electric documents, then: • Secondary School Report form • 9”x12” envelopes properly addressed and stamped • DUE: Oct 1 for Early & Nov 4 for Regular • Counselors will submit/send following materials to each college: Secondary School Report form, official transcript, letter of recommendation, and MHS Profile Senior Parent College Night Teacher “Packets” • After you complete the Brag Packet and updated your “colleges I’m applying to” list… • Add teacher to “Teacher Recommendation” section in Naviance • Student must provide each teacher with the following: – 1 printout of your college list from Naviance – 1 copy of your unofficial transcript (given out in class) – If there are schools not accepting electric documents, then: • Teacher Evaluation form • Regular size envelopes properly addressed and stamped • DUE: Oct 1 for Early & Nov 4 for Regular • Teachers will submit/send following materials to each college: Teacher Evaluation form and recommendation letter Senior Parent College Night Student Responsibilities • Senior Year “Prep for College” Calendar • Submit your application to the college or university before the due date. You must use the application provided by your college or the Common Application; Naviance is not a college application system. • Submit requests for recommendation letters, secondary school report forms, transcripts by following the instructions. • Thoroughly complete the Brag Packet on time. • Make sure that you have waived your access and signed the FERPA agreement in Naviance (and in Common Application). • Make sure your “college I’m applying to” list in your Naviance account is accurate. Senior Parent College Night Student Responsibilities cont. • Request that official test scores be sent to your college or university directly from the College Board and/or ACT. Malibu HS cannot send test scores to colleges. • Follow up with each college or university you apply to, to make sure that all required materials were received. • Follow instructions for submitting Mid Year Report forms and transcripts… in January! • When you receive an admission decision from a college, update your status in Naviance. • Write a thank you note to those that helped you, especially with writing you recommendation letters. Senior Parent College Night Parent Responsibilities • Kudos for being here tonight! • Senior Year “Prep for College” Calendar • HELP your student get organized, especially with the recommendation letter request process • Prepare income tax and financial statements for financial aid applications • Visit colleges with your student • Be positive but not unrealistic • Do not complete the admission application or write the essay for your student • Let your student enjoy his/her Senior year Senior Parent College Night College Entrance Exams Remaining test dates: • SAT: – October 5 SAT Bootcamp available! – November 2 – December 7 • ACT: – October 26 – December 14 • Official score reports required by all colleges. • Allow at least 4-6 weeks for delivery. • FREE SAT & ACT prep course in Naviance!
