History
• In the 1860’s & 70’s cattle ranching in the U.S. was a crude
industry.
• Fence cutting, cattle rustling, and conflicting claims on land
were just a few of the problems.
• A “packer monopoly” kept market information from cattle
producers.
• Railroads started charging exorbitant rates for shipping
cattle.
• Cattleman needed to band together to have strength in
solving these issues.
• National cattle producers organization became a group in
1898.
• It was called the National Livestock Association (NLSA) and
the other was American Cattle Growers Association.
• The associations was created to help beef growers
History
• Frank J. Hagenbarth was the president of
NLSA in 1904-1905
• He worked hard to merge the two
association
• In 1906 the hard work paid off the two
merged together to form the American
National Livestock Association (ANLSA).
• Later renamed the National Cattleman’s
Beef Association (NCBA).
Issues
• Cloning (Meat and milk from cows, swine, and goat clones are
as safe as food we eat everyday.)
• Interstate Shipping (NCBA supports congress’s effort in
allowing processing plants to ship cattle across state lines just like
federally inspected plants .)
• Antibiotics (NCBA supports FDA in making science-based
decisions regarding the safety and efficacy of antibiotics and
antimicrobials used in animal agriculture.)
•
Grazing Permit Buyouts (NCBA and PLC object to
any national proposal to buy out federal grazing permits or lower
animal unit months on federally managed grounds.)
