Impact on Smart Grid Standards Development

Through close work with U.S. DOE, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Smart Grid Interoperability Standards Program has:

 Released NIST Framework and Roadmap for Smart Grid Interoperability Standards, Release 1.0

 Released Guidelines for

Smart Grid Cyber Security

 Launched Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP) to provide a forum for collaboration with the private sector – now 1,750 members from 634 organizations

Interoperability related R&D Areas From U.S. DOE Multi-Year Program Plan (MYPP)

Standards & Best Practices

– Developing, maintaining, and harmonizing national and international standards on interconnection, integration, interoperability, and cyber security requirements and conformance test procedures for distributed energy resources • –

Modeling

– Supporting development of open standards for describing distribution systems, customer loads, and smart grid components

Evaluation &Demonstrations

– Developing protocols and methods for testing and evaluating new components and systems

Smart Grid Test Beds

• • • Research test beds are adaptable and configurable to simulate different grid conditions and combinations of generation, storage, communications and devices to test and charcterize performance under controlled conditions Test beds may be used by grid operators, electric power suppliers, and manufacturers of energy efficient building systems and equipment APEC test beds could become part of the Smart Grid International Research Facility Network (SIRFN) to be coordinated by the International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN)
