disasters?
II Background Information





On the afternoon of May 12, 2008, an earthquake measuring
8.0 on the Richter scale hit Sichuan Province, a mountainous
region in Western China. The quake, whose death toll has
exceeded 40,075, has seriously damaged buildings, bridges
and other public facilities in an area of more than 100,000
square kilometers, which is the second largest earthquake
after the foundation of People’s Republic of China.
China State Council decreed that a national mourning from
May 19 to 21 be held, during which flags throughout this
country are to be flown at half-mast. The BOCOG also
indicated that, from May 19 to 21, the Olympic torch relay in
China will be suspended for 3 days of mourning.

Faced with the sudden terrible natural disaster, CWE staff have donated
large sum of money to show our deep condolences and sincere support
to the victims in this earthquake, even many overseas staff expressed
their determination, confidence and love to help them overcome the
difficult time. “We are trying our best to support them” is the common
aspiration of all CWE members.


Until May 20, CWE has raised more than 146,687 RMB donation fund,
overseas staff members have also actively raised money for the
motherland victims, among them, Ghana Road project donated 4,540
USD, Ghana Branch Office 5,500 USD, United States and Pakistan
Branch raised 900USD and 451,600 Rupee respectively.


All CWE staff are eagerly expecting that people in disaster area can
successfully reconstruct their homeland at an early date.
