Cancer-causing gas in
Beverly Hills California
By Michael Zara
Erin Brockovich’s law firm
is at it again!
The City of Beverly Hills and three oil
companies presently have a law suit
against them pending for ignoring cancer
causing toxic gases that have been
leaking from oil wells drilled on the
Beverly Hills school grounds.
History:
Post World War II Beverly Hills was found too
have oil and gas reserves, and the area was
lightly drilled.
The drilling leases were owned at the time by
Getty oil and Standard oil, the Beverly Hills
school district collected 25 million dollars in
1973 for the use of the area.
More History...
Right now there are 18 active wells and
25 abandoned wells on an 8000 sq. ft.
property lease held by Venoco.
The air around the track and out door
basketball facilities was tested and found
positive for benzene and n-hexane (both
carcinogens) and methane (which is
poisonous). These gases are constantly
seeping from one of the sites.
Litigants:
Chevron-Texaco Oil
Occidental Petroleum Corp
Venoco Inc. of Carpinteria
Plaintiffs:
Suit was promoted by two students who went to
the Beverly Hills High School and who had been
infected by the same type of rare cancer. The
cancer is called Hodgkins. The chance of
contracting this type of cancer is 1 in 100,000.
Brockovich has found 20 other cases of
Hodgkins lymphoma and 12 cases of nonhodgkin’s at Beverly Hills High.
