A CARA Portable
Communications
Unit
The Need/Opportunity
The club has:
a portable VHF repeater, an HF portable radio system in a box, a
generator and antenna systems.
The club does not have:
a reliable means of transport, deployment or housing of equipment
and operators to support various club and community activities or a
response to an emergency request, nor…
a deep pool of skilled operators.

The club can:
address these needs and provide the means to encourage and
facilitate the general membership to take up portable operation as
an additional amateur radio activity.

used at many Marion County events to support amateur
radio communications

• This unit has portable
heating and cooling units
that are removable from
the trailer.
The tables are of the fold
down catering type and
are secured to the floor
with conduit straps.
The shelf is standard
closet shelving with a
Plexiglas runner on top
and a carpet remnant
covers the plywood floor.

110 volt access. AC panel 30 Amp and 2 - 20 Amp

3 battery systems and isolator provides noise elimination and uniform charging
Budgetary Capital Costs

Single axel trailer: 10 by 6 by 6 ; side door and dual
rear doors; flow through vents and windows on the
road and off road sides $6,500.
Materials for insulation, shelving, seating, storage,
lighting, heating, cooling, power distribution and wiring
$3,500.
Budgetary Operational Costs
1. Insurance: Collision, theft and vandalism.

Time Line and activities
• Trailer acquisition: 12 weeks from order.
• Project management plan within 30 days of approval.
• Materials and equipment to outfit the unit are all locally
available upon demand.
• Installation of materials and equipment 20 man days.
• Volunteer work parties to acquire and stage materials
and equipment from April to 4rd week in June.
• Target for first use: Field Day 2012, June 23rd and 24th.
