What is an IHE Connectathon?
A Sneak Peak at the Testing Floor
What is an IHE Connectathon?
What is an IHE Connectathon?
• Lollapalooza of Health IT Interoperability
o 5 days of interoperability testing
o 500+ industry engineers
o 11 continents
o 100+ companies
o 160 systems
• Cross-vendor, live, supervised and structured
testing event
o Vendors implemented IHE Integration
Profiles
o Test interoperability with multiple industry
partner systems
o Work is overseen by technical
management team & 70 trained monitors
o Radiology modality system can test with 5
RIS, 10 PACS, 20 Displays in 5 days
What is an IHE Connectathon?
• Interoperability problem resolution
o Resolve bugs with test writers and standard experts on-site
o Utilize full logging details and common set of test scripts- based on IHE Profiles
and clinical scenarios
o Problems are resolved in 5 minutes rather than 5 months
• High powered testing event!
o 5,000+ vendor-to-vendor connections; 10,000+ transactions
o $2.0 million of testing efforts [500 engineers x 8 hrs/day x 5 days = 20,000
engineer-hours x $100/hr - not including prep and setup time]
• Interoperability initiatives
o Expanding to include IHE USA Certification, Continua, new IHE Domains and more
o Details announced in August 2013

500 engineers
11 different countries
114 organizations
162 test systems
62 volunteer test monitors
3,737 tests were completed, then marked ‘verified’
1,096 profile/actor pairs were reported with a "Passed" status. These represent the
IHE capabilities successfully tested in the participants' test systems.
• 118 vendors will continue on to promote their success at the HIMSS13
Interoperability Showcase, demonstrating 111 systems
Preparing for CAT14 Testing
• What happens on-site and after CAT testing?
• Benefits of testing at IHE NA CAT
• Registration Schedule & Steps
– Education & Test Selection
– Contracting
– Pre-CAT Testing Requirments
What happens at on-site at CAT?
• Settle at the Hyatt Regency Chicago and set-up on
the testing floor
– 70,000 square feet of engineering brain power
– Aisle after aisle
• 500 engineers
• 250 computer laptops
• Countless wires, imaging equipment, devices
• Coffee cups and water bottles
Next Log into Gazelle
• IHE International’s web-based software system to manage testing
– http://ihe.wustl.edu/gazelle-na/home.seam
• Gazelle assigns set of required tests for each profile / actor
– Execute each test with 3 peer systems
• Gazelle identifies candidate test partners; vendors choose
• Vendors run tests, enter results in Gazelle
• USA’s Connectathon monitors examine individual test results
What happens at on-site at CAT?
• Collaborative event
• Vendors work non-stop to ensure their systems interoperate by close the
event
• Complete as many test requirements
– Initial “failures” can be fixed and retested later in the week
– Opportunity to find problems in products and in the profiles
• Competitors work cooperatively to debug system code and work towards
success
What happens at on-site at CAT?
• Organizations set priorities and manage your time
– IHE USA can advise but do not babysit
– IHE USA does not guarantee all tests will be completed
– Some organizations drop IHE Profiles… Better to pass 5, then fail 8
What happens after the CAT?
• Monitor reviewed tests are examined by technical management
o Not all tests submitted are reviewed by monitors
o Management grads tests pass / fail based on successful criteria
in IHE’s test plans and assigns grades
• Vendors given opportunity for rebuttal
• Results posted on CAT Test Result Database
o http://connectathon-results.ihe.net/
CAT Results Database- Fine Print
• Management grades tests pass / fail based on success criteria in IHE’s test
plans and assigns grades
• IHE USA publishes which actor/integration profile pairs each organization
has tested
• IHE USA does not publish failures
• IHE USA does not publish product names or software releases
• IHE USA is not a certification body or government testing body
• IHE USA does not guarantee conformance
• IHE USA does not endorse any vendors based on test results
• IHE USA does not guarantee participation in IHE demonstrations
How do you define success at CAT?
Tangible Rewards
• Results posted on CAT Test Result
Database
• http://connectathon-results.ihe.net/
• Publish an IHE Integration Statement
• http://productregistry.ihe.net/PR/home.seam
Intangible Rewards
• Product development
• Industry rewards
Industry Benefits of CAT Testing
• Be present with industry leadership – Doug Fridsma from U.S. Office of
the National Coordinator will be on-site all week
• Learn from 500 of the industry’s top professionals on-site
• Demonstrate market leadership in interoperability
• Be part of the emerging healthcare consensus in standards and
interoperability at NA CAT Conference- January 29, 2014
– Features national leadership
– Conference attendees tours CAT14 testing floor
Product Benefits of CAT Testing
• Reduce development costs and time to market
– Obtain independent product testing to ensure quality and drive
down implementation costs
– Problem resolution solved in minutes, not months!
• Implement IHE Profiles to meet key C-CDA interoperability capabilities in
Meaningful Use Stage 2 certification requirements
• Qualify to participate in HIMSS Interoperability Showcase
• Register your products in the IHE Product Registry
