Why on Earth would I want to be a chaperone?

It’s free! It’s fun!

It’s free!!

It’s a chance to share a once in a lifetime experience with your son or daughter.

It’s a chance to get to know your child’s school friends and see how they interact.

We need your help.

You get to do all of the interesting and fun activities and the camp counselors do all of the work.

You don’t have to worry about big discipline problems – Chaparral teachers will handle that for you.

It will insure that your child gets to be with their group of friends.

It’s a free trip to Catalina when it’s warm!

A New Requirement from the District

• All volunteers are now required to register with the district. Different levels of participation require different clearances. This is for the protection of our kids.

• Chaperoning the 7 th Grade Catalina Camp is considered a level 3 chaperone. Volunteers must complete the following requirements before attending camp.

Volunteers are required to complete ALL of the following: 1.

2.

3.

4.

Submit completed application each school year Provide a copy of California Driver’s license or California ID Submit a cleared tuberculosis test (good for 4 years) Fees paid by applicant Undergo a background check and be fingerprinted at the District office Livescan facility. Fees paid by applicant. (This process takes approximately three weeks)

• • • • If you are interested in chaperoning our camp please sign up after the meeting and pick up a volunteer packet to be completed and turned in to the Chaparral Office: Attn. Catalina Camp Chaparral Middle School 1405 Spruce Tree Dr.

Diamond Bar, CA 91765 Sometime in February I will check the list against the list of cleared volunteers at the district office. I will contact the group of approved volunteers and set up an information meeting.

• Please don’t let the extra hoops to jump through dissuade you from signing up. We can’t do this without you. • If you are thinking, “Oh, they’ll have enough volunteers without me.” You’re wrong. Every year we barely have enough volunteers even before these new requirements. Often a few volunteers drop out at the last minute and we are desperate.

• You will not regret going. All of our volunteers love the experience and come back with their other kids.

Things to Consider Before Signing Up to be a Chaperone

1.

Chaperones are required to go on all activities with their trail groups. This includes snorkeling, hiking, and kayaking even on the last day when you might be tired.

If you do not feel like you could do these things, please do not sign up. If a chaperone is unable to fill their duties the trail group may not be allowed to participate.

2.

Children must be in the same trail group as their parent who is chaperoning. If your child has a friend who’s parent is also chaperoning, they will not be able to be in the same trail group and most likely will not be able to be in the same cabin. Check with your child’s friends’ parents to see if they are also volunteering and consider if this will be a problem or not.

3.

If a chaperone backs out at the last minute it is very difficult for us to find a replacement.

If the type of work you do makes it difficult to schedule and lock-in vacation time and there is a good possibility you may have to drop out please do not sign up or instead, put yourself as a back-up option.

Interested in being a chaperone?

Please sign up after the meeting and we will contact you or you can contact me at any time to put yourself on the list.

Frequently Asked Questions

• • Q: Will my child be able to choose their group?

A: Children of chaperones will be selecting their groups. An attempt will be made to keep other groups together and fit them into the chaperone groups, but there is a limit of 10 per group, so groups may be broken up. Students will always be kept with at least 1 of their friends from their group.

• • Q: Can we choose which camp our child will be going to?

A: No. Other than size (Toyon Bay will have over 200 students and Fox Landing only 100) the camps offer similar accommodations and activities.

• • Q: If my child cannot attend for some reason can I get my contribution back?

A: Yes. If your child cannot attend your money will be refunded, just contact Michael Miller. After March refunds will be subject to a $25 fee.

• • Q: Can my child bring a cell phone?

A: Yes, but there is no service out there. No other electronics besides an alarm clock please.
