Augmented Reality Apps
What is Augmented Reality?
• Abbreviated as AR, Augmented Reality is The
process of superimposing digitally rendered
images onto our real-world surroundings,
giving a sense of an illusion or virtual reality.
Augmented Reality Explained
Ice Breaker #1
(Revisited)
• Grab an iPad AND a game
board from the front
table.
• Find the Amazing Space
Journey App.
• Wait for directions.
• Have the Solar System in
the palm of your hand, on
your desk, etc.
• Download the board
here.
Ice Breaker #2
• Grab a different game board
from the front table.
• Find the Shape Quest App.
• Wait for directions.
• 80 fun-filled educational
puzzles focused on
geometry, spatial reasoning
and problem solving
• Download the board here.
QR Codes
• Stands for Quick Response
• A 2D (two-dimensional)
barcode that stores
information (URL, etc.) both
horizontally -- as onedimensional bar codes do -and vertically.
• As a result of that
construction, 2D codes can
store up to 7,089 characters,
significantly greater storage
than is possible with the 20character capacity of a
unidimensional barcode.
QR Code Reader Information
• The better the camera on your device, the
better its ability to read QR codes:
– Smaller codes
– Codes with more information
– Codes at a greater distance
• Reader we recommend:
– QR Code Reader by Scan, Inc.
QR Code Generator Information
• Use Kaywa, QR Stuff, or sites to create QR codes.
• Static:
– Points to a fixed address, etc.
• Dynamic:
– Ability to change the information stored within the QR
Code without having to generate a new code.
– Use Snap.vu to create these
• When creating a QR Code with a lengthy URL,
shorten the URL using bit.ly or goo.gl.
• Use Vocaroo or QR Voice to record audio files
embedded into a QR Code.
Aurasma
• Bring tagged images, objects and
even physical locations to life with
interactive digital content, such as
video, animations, and 3D.
• These augmented reality experiences
are called Auras.
• Build Auras using your own photos
and videos, or alternatively, select
from thousands of digital animations
available on the platform.
• Most popular user-generated Auras
include adding 3D dinosaurs to your
street, sending a video message on a
greeting card, leaving hidden clues in
a treasure hunt, or adding
information to classroom materials.
• View an extreme example here.
Aurasma Tips
• Create an account online at Aurasma Studio.
• Because internet Safety Mode is enabled at
school, save YouTube videos to your computer
before embedding them as overlays.
• For uniformity, let’s agree that setting an
action to Double Tap will mean open full
screen.
