Senioritis and Senior Slide
Many seniors are
“bitten” by the
senioritis bug.
Don’t get caught!
Senior Slide is a
partner to
“senioritis”.
Don’t get caught!
Yes! You are required to be in
school all day senior year!
Wisconsin Statute 118.33 (1)(b) states, “. . . A school board may
not grant a high school diploma to any student unless, during the
high school grades, the pupil has been enrolled in a class or has
participated in an activity approved by the school board during
each class period of each school day.”
This means high school students must attend school all day, or
a school board approved activity, during their 4 years of high
school (grades 9-12), to be eligible for a high school diploma.

Advanced Placement Courses
• 14 AP course options in school district
• Optional AP Exams offered in May – $86 each
• Class helps prepare for the exam – but can take
exam without the class
• 5 is highest score; 1 is lowest – If you earn a 3, 4,
or 5 on most exams, 90% of colleges accept this
for credit
• Results sent to students and high school near end
of July
• The best AP candidates are very motivated students who
tend to earn mostly A’s and B’s in classes. Homework
expectations are generally high for these courses.
Youth Options
• For Juniors and Seniors
• Take classes at tech and/or
4-year colleges
-Apply in Oct. & Feb. for the
following semester.

English Language Arts
• Juniors – You will most likely need 1.0 credit of
English Language Arts for senior year.
• Competitive universities like UW-Madison
generally like to see more than 4 credits of
Language Arts.
• REMEMBER – For A.P. courses, you should be
earning an A or B+ grade in Language Arts
*teacher recommendation
*parent signature
MATH – 3 credits to graduate
• See current math teacher and get initials for
recommendation
• Taking Algebra I in Grade 8 counts for 1 elective
credit, not math credit.
• Gr. 8 Geometry DOES count for HS
math credit.
• Most colleges want to see 4 years math
• It will be beneficial to have as much math in high
school to prepare for college.
Alternative Ways to Earn Math
Credits for HS Graduation
•
Earn a .5 math credit and a .5 elective credit by
taking:
1) Business and Marketing Math OR
2) Computerized Accounting I OR
3) Computerized Accounting II and III
** Only 1 credit total can apply toward the 3rd required
math credit.
•
Another option for math credit would be to take up
to 2 semesters of computer programming classes to
earn up to 1 total high school math credit.
NOTE: WHEN MAKING
MATH SELECTIONS…
• For many colleges,
Intro. to Statistics
and AP Statistics is
not considered a core
math credit, but is
considered elective
math credit..
You are responsible to check with your college!
SCIENCE – 2 credits
• Physical Science and
Biology for graduation,
BUT colleges want to see at
least 3-4 years of lab
science, so Chemistry or
Conceptual Chemistry are
highly recommended.
• If you took Biology in Gr. 9
and Chemistry in Gr. 10,
you MUST take Physics
before graduation (or take
Physical Science).
SCIENCE (con’t)
• Conceptual Chemistry is a college-prep chemistry
course for students who are not strong in math
and/or DO NOT plan to enter a science-related
field. Some NWTC programs will not accept
this.
• It is required that students have COMPLETED at
least Algebra I, Int. Math 1 or Int. Math B before
taking a chemistry or physics course.
• It is recommended that you complete
Chemistry and Biology before taking Advanced
Biology.
General Anatomy/ Physiology
• College level, transcripted
course
• Good preparation for a
health career.
• Taken at East High
• New: Taken (all year) both
semesters for 1 credit
• Required: Must complete
Chemistry or Conceptual
Chemistry with a “C” or
higher.
• Average daily homework 1.5-2 hrs. RIGOROUS.
Personal and Financial Literacy .5 credit
• Changed from Personal Financial
Management.
• Test out option before senior year.
• The test-out option is offered in
December
• Students must score 70% or better
to earn a “P” and not have to take
the class.
• Credit is not given.
World Language
• UW-Madison requires 2
years but prefers 3
• UW-Eau Claire requires
2 years.
• Other colleges require
you take 2 years on
campus if you don’t
enter with it.
Physical Education 1.5 credits
• PE 12 is an elective
credit, not a class to
fulfill a requirement.
• You may also take any
of the other PE
choices except PE 9
for elective credit.
Course Fees
• Some courses
require additional
fees for materials
and supplies.
Consult the course
description book

information.
