Ann’s story
 Anne Frank was born on June 12, 1929 in
Frankfurt, Germany. At that time the Jewish
community formed an important part of the
city’s economic and cultural success. Her
father, Otto Frank, was a respected
businessman whose family lived in the city for
many generations. They lived in a comfortable
five-room flat and Anne was raised with love
and great care. In the spring of 1934, a year
after Hitler and the Nazi party rose to power,
the family moved to Holland.


The Nazi Party ruled Germany from 1933
to 1945. One of their key policies was to
kill all the Jews in Europe. When Jews
were found, they were sent to
concentration camps farther east to be
killed, mostly in Poland. Families were
separated and transported in trains. For
many days, they went without food, water
or fresh air. To avoid this terrible fate,
some Jewish families went to hiding, often
with the help of non-Jewish friends.

After the German invasion of 1940, Anne was
forced to leave her school, as were all known
Jews. At first, the Gestapo sent thousands of
Dutch people who opposed the Nazis to salve
labor camps in Germany. Then in February
1941 they Gestapo began to arrest Jews. It
was in July 1942 that Otto Frank made plans to
hide his family in the attic of an office building.
During the day the lower floors continued to
serve as a place of business. After working
hours, the Frank family’s Dutch friends brought
them food, clothing, news from outside world.

The Franks and another family, the Daans, hid
there for two years. It was very crowded. Only
three young people were there: Margot, Peter
and Anne. Anne felt herself the naughty one
since she was always being scolded and often
got into quarrel with her mother. She felt she
couldn’t share her thoughts with her sister
Margot because she was always good. And she
felt she could not talk to Peter because he was
a boy. So she made a friend of her diary, in
which she recorded not only her experience but
also her feelings and thoughts while hiding in
there.
The Holocaust
 “holocaust” is a word of Greek origin which means
“sacrifice by fire”. Now it is the name used to refer to
this systematic, and state-sponsored murder of the 6
million Jews by Nazi Germany led by Adolf Hitler
during World War II. The Holocaust is Beginning with
racially discriminatory laws in Germany, the Nazi
campaign expanded to include the mass murder of all
European Jews. Of the nine million Jews who had
lived in Europe before the Holocaust, about two-thirds
were killed. In particular, over one million Jewish
children were killed in the Holocaust, as were about
two million Jewish women and three million Jewish
men.

I finally realized that I must do my schoolwork to
keep from being ignorant, to get on in life, to become a
journalist, because that’s what I want! I know I can
write ..., but it remains to be seen whether I really
have talent ...
And if I don’t have the talent to write books or
newspaper articles, I can always write for myself. But I
want to achieve more than that. I can’t imagine living
like Mother, Mrs. van Daan and all the women who go
about their work and are then forgotten. I need to
have something besides a husband and children to
devote myself to! ...
When I write I can shake off all my cares. My sorrow
disappears, my spirits are revived! But, and that’s a
big question, will I ever be able to write something
great, will I ever become a journalist or a writer?

“For its innermost depths, childhood is lonelier
than old age.” I read this saying in some book and
I’ve always remembered it, and found it to be true.
Is it true then that grownups have a more difficult
time here than we do? Older people have formed their
opinions about everything, and don’t waver before
they act. It’s twice as hard for us young ones to hold
our ground, and maintain our opinions.
Anyone who claims that the older ones have a
more difficult time here certainly doesn’t realize to
what extent our problems weigh down on us,
problems for which we are probably much too young.
It’s really a wonder that I haven’t dropped all my
ideals, because they seem so unrealistic and
impossible to carry out. Yet I keep them, because in
spite of everything I still believe that people are really
good at heart…
