and owned books from his
community. Beatty knew this and
sent him hints, like sending the
Hound over to his house. He then,
later, took Montag to burn his own
house.

Tess hid her past and her baby from
everyone except her family.
Though, when she met Angel and
fell in love with him, suddenly
keeping this secret seemed wrong,
and she told him on their
honeymoon.

their families. The person could feel guilty and they might
give up their secret. A person could continue to hide but
could possibly be discovered.

Montag, and Montag kills him
with his flame thrower. He is
then on the run and must escape
from society.

Tess kills Alec because he
teased her for loving Angel
Clare and because she felt that
she could not live happily when
he was still alive. She is then
found and hanged for her crime.
Murder and loss of one’s place in
society continued…

A person could feel so strongly about something that they
would take someone’s life for it. A person could want to be
rid of taunting and humiliation so they might kill to gain
their freedom. The person could give up their place in
society by doing so but they might even be happy.
Law exceptions for higher
members of society

Fahrenheit 451:

Tess of the d’urbervilles:


but he was not punished for it.

Alec raped Tess and he was
never penalized.
Law exceptions for higher
members of society continued…
 How high one is on a social scale could determine how
much a person could get away with. A person could use
this as an advantage and do things that a lower class person
could not. They could even do things to other people who
might not be able to do anything about it.
Love verses no emotion
