“Asynchronous” vs. “Synchronous”
Asynchronous
• AKA: “Induction Motor”
• Speed:
– Base speed
– Max speed
Synchronous
• AKA: “Permanent Magnet Motor”
• Speed:
– Rated speed
– Max speed
• Torque:
• Torque:
– S1: continuous duty
– S2: 60 minute duty
– S3: 30 minute duty
– Tc: Continuous torque
– Tp: Peak torque
• Duty Cycle:
• Duty Cycle:
– “Service Factor”
– Ratio of peak to continuous torque
– Trms: RMS torque
– Factors in Tc, Tp and dwell time

“Asynchronous” vs. “Synchronous”
Asynchronous
• “Slip Frequency”
– Rotor rotates at slightly lower frequency
than rotating electromagnetic field
Synchronous
• No “Slip Frequency”
– Rotor rotates at same frequency as
rotating electromagnetic field
• Example:
– Rotor commanded to rotate at 1750 RPM
– Electromagnetic field needs to rotate at
1800 RPM

High Performance Solution
HPK- Series
• Provide both high power and precision in an economical package
– Combines the cost advantages and high power of an asynchronous motor with the
control capabilities of a synchronous motor
• Offer high acceleration / deceleration capability for very large, high inertia
loads
– Peak torque = 2.0x continuous torque
– Low inertia rotor (relative to traditional induction motors)
• Consistent “look and feel” of Kinetix integrated motion
– Common programming, commissioning and troubleshooting environment
• Combine HPK-Series motors with the Kinetix 7000 high power servo drive
– High performance solution up to 150 kW
• Available in 7 frame sizes
– 400 and 460V motors provide Continuous torque from 96 to 955 Nm (849 to 8445 lb-in.)
and peak torque from 192 to 1927 Nm (1699 to 17042 lb-in.) with base speeds of 1500
and 3000 rpm

Typical Performance – HPK-Series Motors
• Special windings provide
“permanent magnet”
performance out to base
speed
• Peak torque = 2.0x
continuous torque
