• When you apply knowledge of synonyms and antonyms you can tell
what new words mean.
• You may not know what a word means but you can examine the
answer choices as synonyms or antonyms of the word and see if
they fit:

• It is important to use synonyms and
antonyms to determine the meaning of
unknown words because:
• 1. We can sometimes learn new words as we read them
without using a dictionary.
• 2. It helps us understand what we are reading better.
• 3. There are 8 questions on the CST that will test this
skill.

Concept: When you apply knowledge of synonyms and antonyms you
can tell what new words mean.
Steps:
1. Read the Passage/sentence carefully.
2. Read the question carefully.
3. If it is an antonym question, look for the word that will not fit in the sentence in
place of the underlined word.
4. If it is a synonym question, look for the word that will fit in the sentence in
place of the underlined word.
5. Eliminate wrong answers.
